Chapter 6

Detective Harris entered like he had been waiting for the exact second truth became public.
He did not rush.
He did not shout.
He simply walked through the courtroom doors with two officers behind him and a warrant in his hand.
Jason backed up.
“This is absurd.”
Detective Harris held up the document.
“Jason Mitchell, turn around. You’re under arrest.”
Jason looked at Judge Carter.
“Your Honor, this is a divorce hearing.”
Judge Carter’s voice was cold.
“Not anymore.”
His attorney whispered something, but Jason was no longer listening.
He was looking at me.
“You planned this.”
I held the audit folder against my chest.
“No, Jason. You built this.”
Madison began stepping away.
Not dramatically.
Just enough to separate herself from the man she had stood beside five minutes earlier.
Jason noticed.
“Madison.”
She did not answer.
Detective Harris took Jason’s wrist.
Jason jerked slightly, then caught himself when he remembered the courtroom was watching.
“You’ll regret this,” he said to me.
For years, that sentence would have terrified me.
That day, it sounded small.
I lifted the forensic audit folder.
“The audit froze every account before you entered.”
His face changed.
That was the true blow.
Not the arrest.
Not Madison’s retreat.
Not even the scars seen by everyone.
The money.
Frozen.
The company.
Frozen.
The accounts.
Frozen.
The empire he used to hold me in place had stopped moving before he ever walked into court.
Judge Carter ordered the divorce proceedings suspended pending criminal review.
Jason was restrained.
Madison stood alone behind him.
And I realized something strange.
The courtroom had not saved me.
I had walked in already saving myself.
May you like
The court only finally witnessed it.
