Chapter 5

Jason came to court expecting theater.

His theater.

He brought Madison.

That was intentional.

He wanted me to see her standing behind him, polished and calm, as if she were already the future and I were only a legal inconvenience.

He wanted the judge to see him as composed.

Successful.

Reasonable.

And me as damaged.

Valerie warned me in the hallway.

“He will provoke you.”

“I know.”

“He wants emotion.”

“I know.”

She looked at my gray coat.

“Are you certain?”

My fingers tightened around the fabric.

“Yes.”

The courtroom smelled like old wood, paper, and cold coffee.

Judge Carter entered.

Everyone stood.

Jason’s attorney began with the usual performance.

Mitchell Urban Development was separate property.

The house was purchased through Jason’s income.

The cars were company assets.

The accounts were business reserves.

I had been supported generously.

My contribution was “domestic and aesthetic.”

Aesthetic.

Five years of design strategy, investor decks, client negotiations, renovation plans, and unpaid labor reduced to a decoration word.

Jason watched me from across the aisle, waiting for me to crack.

Then his attorney pushed too far.

He said I was seeking revenge because Jason had “moved on.”

Madison lowered her eyes with theatrical modesty.

Jason smiled.

And when Valerie submitted the sealed evidence packet, Jason stood as if he could still command the room.

“The company, the house, the cars are mine.”

That was when I removed my coat.

The air changed immediately.

Not because scars are shocking.

Because silence had finally lost its costume.

Jason’s face hardened, then paled.

Madison let go of his arm.

I placed one hand on the table.

“Then explain what you did to me.”

Judge Carter’s expression turned from professional restraint to controlled outrage.

The gavel came down.

And Jason’s divorce strategy died in the sound.
