Chapter 2

Preston had not always treated Elena like an enemy.

They met during residency, when neither of them slept enough to hide who they were.

Elena was an emergency physician—fast, precise, calm when everyone else panicked.

Preston was ambitious, charming, and technically brilliant.

He loved telling people they were a medical power couple.

At first, he admired her confidence.

Later, he called it defiance.

The change began when Elena was offered leadership of the hospital’s new emergency medicine program.

The position came with authority over crisis protocols that sometimes overruled surgeons.

Preston congratulated her in public.

At home, he asked why she needed more responsibility when they were trying to start a family.

“You already work too much,” he said.

“So do you.”

“That’s different.”

Elena should have understood then.

Preston did not mind her being strong.

He minded her strength standing beside his instead of behind it.

Khloe arrived six months later as a medical intern assigned to Preston’s department.

She laughed at every joke.

Asked for his advice after hours.

Made small mistakes that required private correction.

Then she began appearing in places Elena had not invited her.

Coffee beside Preston’s laptop.

Messages after midnight.

A red scarf forgotten in his car.

Whenever Elena questioned it, Preston accused her of professional jealousy.

“She respects me,” he said.

Elena answered quietly, “She studies you.”

He laughed.

But Khloe had studied both of them.

She knew Preston’s pride.

She knew Elena’s pregnancy had become complicated.

And she knew exactly which lie would make a controlling man believe cruelty was discipline.
