Chapter 9

The hospital investigation expanded beyond the delivery room.

Compliance reviewed messages between Preston and Khloe.

There was no physical affair proven in the first files.

Something more revealing appeared instead.

Months of emotional intimacy.

Khloe praising Preston whenever Elena challenged him.

Preston complaining that his wife’s career made him invisible.

Khloe writing that Elena needed to be “humbled before the baby came.”

Preston did not object.

In one message, he replied:

Maybe labor will remind her she can’t control everything.

That sentence ended any argument that the delivery-room cruelty had been sudden.

Elena read it once.

Then placed the report face down.

The medical board opened a separate review.

The hospital suspended Khloe’s internship.

Laura received protection as a reporting witness.

The attending surgeon documented that earlier intervention would likely have reduced the emergency severity.

Preston hired an attorney.

His attorney advised him not to contact Elena.

He called anyway.

Marcus answered.

“Do not call her again.”

“I need to explain.”

“You had an entire delivery room to explain your choices.”

“She is my wife.”

Marcus’s voice stayed calm.

“She is recovering from the consequences of being your wife.”

Preston’s breathing stopped.

Then Marcus added, “All future contact goes through counsel.”

Preston finally understood the father he had underestimated was not coming to shout at him.

He was building a record no apology could erase.
