Chapter 8

Preston was allowed one supervised visit.

Elena agreed because she wanted to see whether he would tell the truth without being forced.

He entered without his white coat.

Without his badge.

Without the posture that had once filled rooms.

Marcus remained near the window.

A patient advocate stood beside the door.

Preston looked at Elena, then at the empty neonatal bassinet waiting beside her bed.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena studied him.

“For what?”

His mouth opened.

“I should have listened.”

“That is not enough.”

“I was angry.”

“You were treating me.”

“I know.”

“You were my husband.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

“No, Preston. You knew then.”

He flinched.

Elena continued.

“I told you the baby was too large.”

“I remember.”

“The nurse told you my pressure was falling.”

“I remember.”

“You still looked at Khloe before making a decision about my body.”

Preston lowered his head.

“I thought you were trying to control me.”

Elena’s voice became cold.

“I was trying to stay alive.”

No one in the room moved.

Preston glanced toward Marcus.

“You turned everyone against me.”

Marcus answered quietly.

May you like

“No.”

“The recording did.”
