Chapter 10

The sixty-eight-million-dollar file was not opened.
The financial transfers were not revealed.
No arrests were shown.
No ownership documents appeared on-screen.
No final punishment unfolded in the ballroom.
Brenda was not physically removed.
The confrontation ended between two rooms happening at once.
In the Beverly Hills mansion bedroom, Vivian Albright sat upright against cream pillows in her satin robe, pale and weak but no longer disoriented.
Her hand rested around the black chess queen.
Luke stood beside her with the tablet, one hand steady near the sealed digital folder, his face controlled but fierce.
On the live broadcast, the Grand Horizon gala had gone silent beneath chandeliers and camera lights.
Christopher Albright stood at the muted podium in his black tuxedo, champagne confidence gone, staring toward the broadcast camera as if he could see the wife he had left behind.
Brenda Vance stood in Vivian’s champagne gown, Vivian’s diamonds, Vivian’s wedding ring, and Vivian’s inherited gold bracelet.
Everything she wore now looked less like victory and more like evidence.
Security personnel quietly closed the ballroom doors.
Photographers no longer shouted.
Guests no longer applauded.
The woman Christopher called too ill to attend was watching.
The son Christopher underestimated was controlling the room.
And the file Christopher feared most was waiting beneath Luke’s finger.
Vivian’s breathing remained uneven, but her eyes were clear.
She looked at Brenda on the screen.
Then at Christopher.
Then at Luke.
“Hold it,” she whispered.
Luke nodded.
The folder stayed sealed.
The truth had not yet been exposed.
May you like
But the performance was over.
And everyone in the ballroom could feel the moment before Vivian Albright decided what to reveal first.
