Chapter 9

Vivian asked Luke to bring the tablet closer.

He did.

Her fingers brushed the edge of the screen, not pressing anything, only touching the glass that separated her bedroom from the ballroom where her marriage was ending in public.

Christopher stood at the silent podium, jaw tight.

Brenda stood several feet behind him now.

Not beside him.

Behind.

The distinction mattered.

Vivian knew every arrangement of power in a room because she had built galas before Christopher learned how to smile for donors.

She knew who stood center.

Who hovered.

Who waited.

Who had already been abandoned.

Brenda finally looked toward the cameras with real fear.

Not because she had hurt Vivian.

Because the room no longer believed the role she was playing.

Luke’s finger hovered near the sealed file again.

“Mom.”

Vivian understood the question.

The sixty-eight-million-dollar file was ready.

Not open.

Ready.

If they released it, the gala would become something else entirely.

A corporate rupture.

A financial emergency.

A family scandal too large for any hotel ballroom to contain.

But Vivian’s body still felt wrong. The doctor was on the way. Her legal team was moving. The board had notice. The gala was contained.

Timing.

Always timing.

“Not yet,” she said.

Luke breathed through his nose, frustrated but obedient.

Christopher looked toward a security guard and seemed to give an order.

The guard did not move.

Instead, another guard near the ballroom doors touched his earpiece.

Christopher saw that and went still.

Vivian leaned back against the pillows.

“Now,” she whispered.

Luke spoke into the system again.

Not revealing the file.

Not naming the transfers.

Not accusing anyone of crimes.

Only one sentence.

“From now on, you can support my father yourself.”

The ballroom absorbed it.

Brenda looked as if the floor had shifted.

Christopher turned toward the camera, and for the first time all night, he looked toward Vivian’s unseen presence with fear.
