Chapter 5

Vivian watched Christopher’s face through the tablet.

That gave her more satisfaction than she expected.

Not joy.

Never joy.

There is no joy in watching twenty-two years of marriage reveal itself as performance.

But there was a precise, terrible comfort in seeing the mask slip.

Christopher had told too many people that Vivian was fragile.

Too tired.

Too sentimental.

Too attached to old family protections.

Too emotional about money.

Too ill to attend.

Now the ballroom saw him turn toward the speakers with the panic of a man who knew illness had not kept his wife away.

Luke stood beside Vivian’s bed with the tablet balanced in both hands.

He had inherited Christopher’s intelligence and Vivian’s discipline.

That combination frightened people who were used to controlling one or the other.

“Mom,” he said quietly, “I can open the folder.”

Vivian tightened her grip on the black chess queen.

“No.”

Luke looked at her.

“They deserve to know.”

“They will,” she said. “But not before everything is locked.”

Her voice was weaker than she wanted.

Still, Luke obeyed instantly.

That was the difference between him and Christopher.

Luke understood restraint as strength.

Christopher saw restraint as weakness to exploit.

On the live feed, Brenda looked down at the bracelet on her wrist.

Vivian’s bracelet.

The one she had worn at her mother’s memorial.

The one Brenda had probably fastened while Vivian lay unconscious upstairs.

Vivian’s stomach turned.

Luke saw her expression and reached for the tablet control.

Vivian touched his wrist.

“Don’t expose the jewelry yet.”

He swallowed hard.

“She’s wearing your wedding ring.”

“I know.”

“She’s standing beside Dad like you’re already gone.”

Vivian looked at the screen.

Brenda’s face was pale now, but she still held herself like a woman searching for the next lie.

Vivian lifted the chess queen.

“Then let her stand there a little longer.”

Luke’s eyes sharpened.

He understood.
