Chapter 2

Nancy had been married to Thomas for only nine days.

That was what the town whispered.

Nine days.

A hospital wedding.

A dying man.

An old woman wearing white beside an oxygen tank.

Some people called it romantic.

Some called it foolish.

A few called it suspicious.

Nancy heard everything.

At seventy-three, people assumed grief made her deaf.

It did not.

She heard the nurses crying quietly.

The cousins wondering what Thomas had changed in his will.

The nephew asking whether the wedding would “complicate the estate.”

The church ladies saying it was beautiful but strange.

Nancy ignored them because Thomas had held her hand and asked one simple question.

“Will you let me keep the promise late?”

She said yes before the doctor adjusted his oxygen.

Before Samuel Reed stepped forward with the papers.

Before the gold ring slid onto her finger.

Before anyone else understood that this wedding was not sudden to Thomas.

Only to them.

Now, in her living room, the same ring pressed against the brass key.

The wooden box sat between her and Samuel like a heartbeat from the past.

“What did he mean by trap?” Nancy asked.

Samuel did not sit until she did.

“He said you would think love brought you back.”

Nancy swallowed.

“It did.”

Samuel’s eyes softened.

“Yes,” he said. “That’s why the trap worked.”
