Chapter 9

Nancy lifted the lid only a fraction.

Just enough for darkness to open beneath her fingers.

Just enough for a scent of old cedar and time to rise from the box.

Just enough for her to see the first shadow of whatever Thomas had hidden.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

Samuel looked away.

Not because he did not know.

Because the moment belonged to her.

Nancy did not speak.

Her eyes widened.

Her breathing stopped, then returned unevenly.

The rain tapped harder against the window.

The framed hospital wedding photograph sat beside the funeral flowers, Thomas’s ring visible on his thin hand.

Nancy looked from the photograph to the box.

Then back again.

The expression on her face was not simple.

Not only shock.

Not only grief.

Recognition.

Fear.

And something dangerously close to anger.

Samuel waited.

He had promised not to rush her.

Finally, Nancy lowered the lid slightly, but not enough to close it.

“What did you do, Thomas?” she whispered.

Samuel’s jaw tightened.

Outside, a car slowed on the wet street.

Nancy heard it.

So did Samuel.

Neither moved.

The box remained open just a crack.
