Chapter 5

Nancy stared at the closed lid.
She had turned the key but had not opened it fully.
Not yet.
Fear held her hand still.
“What if I don’t want to know?” she whispered.
Samuel folded his hands.
“Then you close it.”
“Would Thomas forgive me?”
“He already did.”
The answer hurt.
Nancy looked toward the hospital wedding photograph.
Thomas’s face in the frame was thinner than she remembered from youth, but the smile was the same.
Gentle.
Stubborn.
A little amused.
As if death itself had not stopped him from arranging one final impossible moment.
Nancy touched her wedding ring.
“He should have told me before the ceremony.”
Samuel shook his head.
“He wanted you to say yes without knowing.”
“That sounds manipulative.”
“It was.”
Nancy looked at him sharply.
Samuel did not soften the truth.
“He knew that. He hated it. But he said if you knew there was a box, or a plan, or anything waiting, you might think he wanted a signature instead of a wife.”
Nancy’s eyes filled.
The room blurred.
“He didn’t need to trap me.”
Samuel’s voice was quiet.
“No. But he needed to trap everyone who thought your love made you powerless.”
Nancy went still.
Outside, the rain grew harder.
