Chapter 3

The exclusion happened in front of everyone.

That was the part Harper would not forgive.

If Robert had pulled her aside, if Diane had softened it, if Madison had looked even slightly embarrassed, Harper might have let the plane depart without her.

She might have swallowed the insult and called it peace.

Again.

But Robert liked audiences.

He stood on the driveway surrounded by luggage and relatives, sunglasses on, expensive watch flashing, and said it like an announcement.

“Harper, we talked it over.”

No one had talked to Harper.

Madison adjusted her sunglasses on top of her head and smiled.

“Honestly, it makes more sense. The kids already listen to you.”

Cameron shrugged.

“It’s only five days.”

Diane added, “And you don’t love heat anyway.”

Harper looked at the children standing near the doorway with their tablets and juice cups. They were innocent. Confused. Already sensing adults had turned them into an excuse.

She kept her voice even.

“You want me to stay here with Madison’s and Cameron’s children while the rest of you go to the Bahamas?”

Robert’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t make it sound ugly.”

Madison laughed.

“She always does that. Makes everything sound transactional.”

Harper looked at the stacked bags, the designer sunglasses, the private sedan, the vacation her family had not paid for.

Transactional.

Interesting word.

Diane stepped in with the soft cruelty mothers sometimes use when they want obedience to feel moral.

“Harper, family means sacrifice.”

Harper smiled faintly.

“Whose?”

No one answered.

Robert pointed toward the mansion.

“You’re staying here with the children.”

And in that instant, Harper stopped hoping the trip would reveal love.

It had revealed enough.
