Chapter 6

The Apex representative walked down the mansion steps at exactly the wrong moment for Robert.
Or the right one for Harper.
His name was Elliot Mason. He wore a navy suit despite the Florida heat and held a tablet against his side.
His colleague stayed behind near the entrance, silent and formal.
Elliot did not rush.
People with real authority rarely need to.
He stopped several feet from Harper and nodded respectfully.
“Ms. Bennett, should we release the aircraft?”
Diane inhaled sharply.
Madison’s mouth fell open.
Cameron looked from Elliot to Harper as if the words had arrived in a foreign language.
Robert stepped forward.
“I’m Robert Bennett.”
Elliot gave him a polite glance.
“Yes, sir.”
“The aircraft is for my family.”
Elliot’s expression remained pleasant.
“The aircraft is held under Ms. Bennett’s authorization.”
Robert’s face turned a dangerous shade of red.
“I am her father.”
Elliot did not react.
The sentence meant nothing to the tablet.
Nothing to the contract.
Nothing to the fuel hold, crew dispatch, villa transfer, port schedule, or catering deposit.
Harper watched the realization move through her family like heat through glass.
For years, they had depended on relationships instead of paperwork.
Dad.
Mom.
Sister.
Brother.
Family.
Words used as keys.
But Harper worked in a world where keys required names, signatures, accounts, and authority.
Today, those keys were hers.
Robert looked at Harper.
“You did this to humiliate us.”
She held his gaze.
“No. You humiliated me.”
Her voice stayed calm.
May you like
“I just stopped financing it.”
