Chapter 5

Diane recovered with outrage.

It was her favorite form of denial.

“You can’t cancel our family vacation!”

Her voice carried across the driveway.

A gardener near the side hedge pretended not to hear.

The driver beside the black sedan looked straight ahead with professional discipline.

Harper turned toward her mother.

“Our?”

Diane blinked.

“Yes. Our vacation.”

“Who paid for it?”

Robert’s face darkened.

“Don’t talk to your mother like that.”

Harper did not look away from Diane.

“Who paid for it?”

Madison crossed her arms.

“Dad arranged it.”

Cameron nodded too quickly.

“Exactly.”

Harper gave a soft laugh.

Not amused.

Finished.

“Dad forwarded preferences.”

Robert’s sunglasses hid his eyes, but not the tension around his mouth.

Harper continued.

“Mom chose the villa style. Madison chose the yacht package. Cameron chose the fishing charter. I paid for every ticket, room, and charter.”

No one spoke.

A small suitcase near Madison’s feet rolled slightly down the driveway slope and stopped against a larger trunk.

The sound was absurdly loud.

Diane lowered her hand from her hat.

Madison looked toward Robert.

Cameron removed his sunglasses completely.

Robert tried to speak, failed, then tried again.

“You used family funds.”

“No.”

“You used the travel account.”

“My travel account.”

“You were reimbursed.”

“For what?”

His face reddened.

He did not answer.

Because everyone in that driveway knew the truth.

The Bennetts often called Harper’s money “family funds” when they needed it.

But they never called Harper family when comfort, credit, or joy were being distributed.
