Chapter 1 - The Bruise Above the Pajamas

Father Carries His Bruised Daughter to Safety Until the Neighbor Reveals She Recorded What Happened While He Was Away.

Sawyer held Gracie against his chest so tightly that the gray stuffed rabbit was crushed between them.

The afternoon sun looked too warm for what was happening.

It spilled over the stone suburban house in Oak Hill, caught on the black SUV’s polished door, softened the trees behind the iron gate, and made the driveway look like a place where families should come home safely.

But Gracie was trembling.

Her pale-pink floral pajamas were twisted at the waist.

Above the waistband, a large purple bruise showed against her small lower back.

Her bare feet pressed weakly against Sawyer’s black pants.

Her messy light-brown hair stuck to her wet cheeks.

Carolina stood in front of them with a brown bakery bag in one hand and red nails pointed like a weapon.

“Put her down. She’s lying to punish me.”

Gracie hid her face against Sawyer’s shoulder.

Sawyer did not move toward Carolina.

He moved away.

He turned his body so his wife could not reach the child, both arms locked securely around Gracie’s back and knees.

His face was white with fury, but his voice stayed controlled.

“A hospital will decide what happened.”

Carolina’s expression flickered.

Just once.

Anger shifted into fear before she forced it back.

Gracie lifted her tear-streaked face.

Her fingers gripped Sawyer’s shirt.

“Daddy… please don’t leave me with her.”

Sawyer’s jaw clenched.

He carried her toward the open SUV door.

Carolina followed two hard steps, crumpling the bakery bag in her fist.

“Walk away, and this family is over.”

Sawyer stopped.

He did not turn.

Then the iron gate creaked behind them.

Mrs. Kennedy stepped forward in her lavender cardigan, phone shaking in her hand.

“Sawyer, wait. I recorded what she did.”

Carolina froze.

The bakery bag sagged in her grip.

Sawyer slowly turned, still holding Gracie against his chest.

Mrs. Kennedy did not play the video.

She only held up the phone.

And Carolina’s face told Sawyer it was enough.
