Chapter 4 - Mrs. Kennedy at the Gate

Mrs. Kennedy had lived behind the iron gate for seventeen years.
She knew when garbage trucks came.
She knew which children sold lemonade in July.
She knew when families fought too loudly and when silence became worse.
She had never wanted to be part of Sawyer’s marriage.
But she had been watching the house for three days.
Not spying.
Worrying.
There was a difference.
Now she stood with her phone close to her chest, looking at Gracie like the sight of the child in Sawyer’s arms hurt her physically.
Carolina saw that look and hated it.
“Don’t act noble,” she snapped. “You watched from across the fence.”
Mrs. Kennedy flinched.
Sawyer turned toward the older woman.
“She called you?”
Mrs. Kennedy shook her head.
“No.”
Gracie pressed her face harder into Sawyer’s shoulder.
Mrs. Kennedy’s eyes filled.
“I heard crying.”
Carolina lifted one hand.
“That proves nothing.”
Sawyer did not look at her.
He kept watching Mrs. Kennedy.
The neighbor’s voice lowered.
“I heard crying more than once.”
The warm afternoon seemed to chill around them.
Carolina’s face went still.
Sawyer’s arms tightened around Gracie, careful not to touch the bruised area.
“Why didn’t you call me?” he asked.
Mrs. Kennedy’s mouth trembled.
“I tried the number I had. It went straight to voicemail.”
Sawyer’s eyes moved to Carolina.
She looked away.
That small movement told him enough for now.
Carolina shifted quickly.
“You were in meetings. I didn’t want her bothering you.”
Sawyer’s voice stayed calm, but the control in it was thin.
“You blocked the neighbor’s number on my phone?”
Carolina’s lips parted.
No answer.
Mrs. Kennedy looked down.
“I thought maybe you knew. I thought maybe I was interfering.”
Sawyer swallowed hard.
He wanted to say she should have done more.
He also knew that the person responsible was standing two steps away holding a bakery bag and pretending a bruise was a misunderstanding.
He adjusted Gracie again.
“We’re leaving now.”
Carolina stepped forward.
“If you put her in that SUV, I swear—”
Sawyer turned fully toward her.
“Finish that sentence in front of the phone.”

Carolina’s mouth closed.
