Chapter 5 - The Open SUV Door

The black SUV’s rear door stood open.

Inside, the leather seat waited.

Safe.

Close.

Still too far.

Sawyer moved toward it with Gracie in his arms, every step deliberate. He did not rush because rushing made her bounce, and every tiny movement made him think of the bruise.

Gracie’s rabbit dangled from one hand.

Her other hand gripped his shirt collar.

Mrs. Kennedy followed a few steps behind, phone lowered but ready.

Carolina moved parallel to them, refusing to let the moment leave her control.

“You are kidnapping her from her mother.”

Sawyer stopped beside the SUV.

He looked at her.

“I am taking my injured daughter to a hospital.”

“She doesn’t need a hospital.”

“Then the hospital will tell me that.”

Carolina’s eyes flashed.

“You always choose strangers over me.”

Sawyer almost laughed.

A doctor was not a stranger when a child was hurt.

A neighbor with evidence was not an enemy when a child was afraid.

But Carolina had always rearranged words until responsibility looked like betrayal.

Gracie whimpered as Sawyer bent slightly toward the car.

He paused immediately.

“You okay?”

She nodded, then shook her head, then clutched the rabbit harder.

He changed position, easing her carefully so she did not have to twist.

His face remained controlled, but a vein moved in his jaw.

Mrs. Kennedy watched the adjustment and began crying again.

Carolina rolled her eyes.

“Oh, please.”

Sawyer looked up sharply.

The expression on his face stopped her.

Not because it was loud.

Because it was final.

“Do not mock her pain again.”

Carolina’s lips pressed together.

The bakery bag slipped lower in her hand.

A pastry box shifted inside and hit the paper with a dull sound.

Such a normal sound.

Such a wrong day.

Mrs. Kennedy raised her phone slightly.

“Sawyer, I don’t think you should wait.”

Carolina turned on her.

“You don’t get to decide anything about my family.”

Mrs. Kennedy’s voice broke but held.

“No. But I can tell the truth about what I saw.”

Carolina froze again.

Sawyer looked at the phone.

Not the screen.

The fact of it.
