Chapter 5

Richard mistook Claire’s tears for surrender.

He always had.

He stepped closer, pointing toward the door.

“It’s time to cut the useless people from this family. You’re first.”

The words filled the room.

Even the cousins looked away.

The chandelier light reflected in the wineglasses.

Fireworks flashed outside.

The clock passed midnight.

A new year entered the house at the exact moment Richard threw his daughter out of it.

Vivian leaned over the chair back.

“We’ve carried you long enough.”

Claire looked at her sister.

Vivian had never carried Claire.

Not emotionally.

Not financially.

Not even through grief.

Vivian had carried shopping bags paid for by Claire’s emergency transfers. She had carried keys to places Claire maintained. She had carried confidence built from money she assumed would always arrive.

But Claire said none of that.

She looked at Richard.

Then at Margaret.

Then at Mr. Lowell, whose face had gone tight with alarm.

Claire understood then that the accountant knew more than he wanted to know.

Maybe not everything.

But enough to fear a careless sentence.

Richard jabbed his finger toward the suitcase.

“Leave the documents. Leave the keys. Leave anything connected to this family.”

Claire wiped one tear from her cheek.

Her hand became steady.

“What did you say?”

Richard smiled.

“I said leave what belongs to us.”

That was the final gift.

Not his cruelty.

His assumption.

Claire released the suitcase handle.

Straightened her shoulders.

And felt ten years of guilt fall away like a coat she had outgrown.

“Good,” she said. “You just made my decision easy.”

No one moved.

Because this was not the Claire they knew.

This Claire was not begging to be loved.
