Chapter 8

Margaret tried to recover with dignity.
That was her specialty.
She stepped toward Claire, voice controlled, expression polished.
“Claire, whatever you sent, we can discuss it as a family.”
Claire looked at her mother.
“No.”
Margaret blinked.
“You don’t mean that.”
“I do.”
“This is not how mature adults handle conflict.”
Claire almost smiled.
“You slapped a value on your daughter at midnight and let everyone watch.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“I spoke harshly because I was hurt.”
Claire shook her head.
“No. You spoke clearly because you thought I was trapped.”
Vivian snapped, “Nobody trapped you. You’re the one always acting like a martyr.”
Claire turned to her.
“You wanted the lake house.”
Vivian’s mouth closed.
Richard’s eyes moved quickly to Mr. Lowell.
The accountant went pale again.
Claire saw it.
So did Margaret.
“What about the lake house?” Margaret asked.
Claire did not answer.
That was more frightening than explanation.
Richard stepped closer.
“Claire, you are not going to threaten this family with paperwork.”
She looked at him calmly.
“I’m not threatening anyone.”
“You just sent an email.”
“Yes.”
“What did you cancel?”
Claire held his gaze.
“You should ask Arthur what you told me to leave behind.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
Mr. Lowell closed his eyes briefly, as if silently begging the room to stop digging.
But families like the Bennetts never stop when pride still believes it can win.
Vivian said, “This is ridiculous. The lake house was supposed to be mine.”
The accountant opened his eyes.
Slowly.
And that was when Margaret understood Vivian had just said something dangerous.
Claire picked up her suitcase fully.
The wheels clicked softly against the hardwood floor.

No one mocked the sound this time.
