Chapter 6

Claire had written the email three weeks earlier.

Not sent it.

Not scheduled it.

Written it.

Saved it.

Revised it.

Removed anger.

Removed explanation.

Removed every sentence that sounded like pleading.

What remained was clean.

Precise.

Instructions.

Not accusations.

Not revenge.

A notice that certain arrangements would no longer continue under the conditions the family had just confirmed aloud.

She had hoped never to send it.

That was the sad part.

Even after everything, some foolish part of her had wanted one person to stop the room.

Her father could have stopped.

Her mother could have softened.

Vivian could have looked ashamed.

Mr. Lowell could have warned them out loud.

Anyone could have said, Enough.

Nobody did.

So Claire took out her phone.

Richard laughed.

“What are you going to do? Email your feelings?”

Claire looked at him calmly.

“No.”

She opened the draft.

There were names in the recipient field.

Mr. Lowell’s firm.

A legal contact.

One administrative address.

Others Richard would recognize only when it was too late.

The screen held no readable details to anyone else.

Claire pressed one final confirmation button.

The sent sound was soft.

Almost delicate.

Vivian laughed nervously.

“That’s it?”

Claire placed the phone back into her pocket.

“Yes.”

Richard scoffed.

“Pathetic.”

Then Mr. Lowell’s phone buzzed.

He looked annoyed at first.

Then confused.

Then frightened.

His face changed so completely that even Vivian stopped smiling.

He read the email twice.

His hand trembled.

Margaret noticed first.

“Arthur?”

He did not answer.

Richard turned.

“What is it?”

Mr. Lowell slowly raised his eyes.

“Richard… what exactly did you make her cancel?”

The question landed like a plate breaking in another room.

No one knew yet what had shattered.

May you like

Only that something had.
