Chapter 5

The insult came during the toast.

That was Alden’s mistake.

Private cruelty can hide in corners.

Public cruelty needs witnesses.

Alden had already had two glasses of wine, though he was not drunk enough to excuse anything.

He took the microphone first and delivered a polished speech about family, loyalty, legacy, and the honor of seeing Calder marry “a woman of discipline and grace.”

Elise smiled politely.

Calder’s jaw tightened.

Maren stood near the side table, wineglass in hand, listening as if from a distance.

Then Alden’s eyes found her.

The room sensed the shift before the words came.

Alden lowered the microphone slightly and spoke without it, but loud enough for nearby guests.

“Some people remember family only when there is champagne.”

Griffin chuckled.

Maren remained still.

Alden stepped toward her.

“You should be grateful Calder has a softer heart than I do.”

Calder started forward.

Elise caught his wrist.

Not to stop him.

To tell him she had this.

Alden continued.

“Pity got you invited. You still don’t belong here.”

The words landed across the ballroom like shattered glass.

Maren looked at him for a long moment.

Every guest seemed to wait for anger.

Instead, she took one sip of wine.

Slow.

Controlled.

Then she answered.

“Twenty-one years… and that’s still all you see?”

Alden laughed.

He truly laughed.

Because he believed he had won.

He believed dignity was surrender if it did not shout.

He believed his daughter’s quiet meant she had no power left.

Then the microphone squealed behind him.

Elise raised her hand.

The salute was perfect.

And Alden’s laughter died before the room even stood.
