Chapter 9

The guests remained standing longer than anyone expected.

No one knew what to do next.

Sit?

Toast?

Applaud?

Pretend the father of the family had not just humiliated a woman everyone important was now honoring?

The bride solved it.

She lifted her glass with the hand not holding the microphone.

“To service,” she said.

The officers lowered their salutes and raised glasses.

The room followed.

Maren did not smile broadly.

She gave a small nod.

Enough.

Alden watched the gesture move through the ballroom.

Not commanded by him.

Not approved by him.

Not dependent on him.

That was the part he could not bear.

For decades, Alden had controlled family memory.

Who belonged.

Who failed.

Who was invited.

Who was forgiven.

Who remained unnamed.

But in this ballroom, memory had arrived from outside his reach.

From military guests.

From Calder.

From Elise.

From the rank he never knew or refused to believe.

Griffin leaned toward Alden.

“Dad…”

Alden ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Maren.

“Why are they saluting you?” he asked, voice tight.

Maren looked at him.

The room seemed to lean closer.

She could have answered with titles.

Commands.

Years.

Operations no one would hear.

Instead, she said nothing.

Because Alden had not earned the full story.

His question was not curiosity.

It was panic.

The bride stepped beside Maren now, still holding the microphone.

Her voice softened.

“Sir, with respect, everyone who needed to know already did.”

Alden’s face turned gray.

That sentence ended the fantasy that he had been excluded by accident.

He had been excluded because he was not trusted with the truth.
