Chapter 8

Calder had planned the salute with Elise.
Not the timing.
Not the confrontation.
Only the honor.
They had intended to acknowledge Maren quietly during the reception, after dinner, away from Alden’s temper.
A small toast.
A formal welcome.
A gesture to the aunt who had answered Calder’s calls when his own father treated him like a business extension.
But Alden forced the moment into the open.
So Elise acted.
Later, people would say it was brave.
At that moment, it felt necessary.
Calder stood beside his bride, looking at Maren with a gratitude that made her throat tighten.
When he was sixteen, he had called her from a locked bathroom after Griffin told him Rowe men did not cry.
Maren had stayed on the phone until he could breathe again.
When he was twenty-one, he asked whether leaving family made someone disloyal.
Maren answered, “Leaving cruelty is not betrayal.”
When he got engaged, Elise asked why his aunt was not at family events.
Calder told her enough.
Not all.
Enough.
Elise had quietly checked what could be checked.
The rest was confirmed by people whose posture changed when Maren’s name was spoken.
That was why Elise refused to let Alden turn her wedding into another ceremony of exclusion.
Alden looked toward Calder now.
“You knew?”
Calder held his gaze.
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
Calder’s expression hardened.
“It wasn’t yours to use.”
The sentence struck cleanly.
Maren looked at her nephew with quiet surprise.
He had grown into a man without needing Alden’s permission.
Perhaps that was why Alden looked frightened.

Because control had failed in two generations now.
