Chapter 1

Foster Brother Crushes Her Glasses—Then Federal Agents Arrive at Their Perfect Home.
Tyler thought the rain would wash away what he had done.
I sat in the mud beside the bicycle rack, soaked black hair stuck to my face, one knee pressed into a shallow puddle.
My glasses lay broken in front of me.
One lens was cracked.
The frame had been crushed beneath Tyler’s sneaker after he knocked them from my hand.
My blue inhaler rested several inches away, half-submerged near the curb.
I could not reach it without putting down my phone.
Tyler stood beneath the school awning in his olive-green jacket, dry enough to look innocent if anyone glanced through the windows.
Behind him, the elite Richmond academy rose in red brick and white columns—the kind of school that praised character at assemblies and protected wealthy families in private offices.
Tyler smiled.
“Nobody is coming to save you.”
My breathing came shallow, but my thoughts remained clear.
I lifted the black phone Marianne believed she had confiscated three weeks earlier.
It was not my regular phone.
It was the device holding copies.
Tyler’s expression changed when he recognized it.
I looked directly at him.
“Check the screen.”
He stepped closer.
A large encrypted evidence package waited behind one final command. No readable message appeared, only the progress circle and the destination icon he had seen once inside his father’s office.
The silver SUV near the courtyard jerked open.
Marianne Vale rushed into the rain, heels splashing through puddles, her public smile gone.
“Give me that phone.”
I pressed the button.
A soft confirmation tone sounded.
“Too late. It sent.”
Tyler stopped moving.
His confidence disappeared so quickly it almost looked like childhood.
Miles away, an investigator’s phone illuminated outside the Vale family mansion.
Dark-jacketed federal agents moved toward the brick entrance carrying laptops, folders, and empty evidence boxes.
“Secure every financial record.”
Back in the courtyard, Marianne stared at her own phone as a security alert lit her face.
Grant stepped from the SUV, his businesslike calm finally breaking.
I reached into the puddle and retrieved my inhaler.
A school nurse ran toward me through the rain.
Tyler watched his mother’s hands begin to shake.
And he finally understood the girl his family had spent two years calling helpless had never been helpless.

I had been collecting proof.
