Chapter 7

The school courtyard confrontation began with my inhaler.

A storm delayed afternoon dismissal.

Students waited beneath awnings while cars lined the pickup lane.

I had stayed late to upload the final evidence package through a network unconnected to Grant’s company.

The package included the mansion directory credentials, account records, identity files, and a live copy of messages Tyler had sent that morning.

He had discovered Kayla’s name in my notebook.

He confronted me beside the bicycle rack.

“Who is Kayla?”

I said nothing.

He grabbed my backpack and dumped it into the rain.

Books fell into the mud.

The blue inhaler rolled beneath the rack.

My glasses slipped when I reached for it.

Tyler took them.

He held them between two fingers.

“You really do not learn.”

I raised my phone.

He saw the black case.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

I stepped backward.

He dropped my glasses into the puddle and crushed them beneath his sneaker.

He did not hit me.

He did not need to.

Without the lenses, the courtyard blurred into movement and rain.

Then he kicked the inhaler farther away.

My chest tightened.

“You’ll give me the phone,” he said. “Then you’ll tell Dad who helped you.”

I sat beside the bicycle rack, partly because I was dizzy and partly because lowering myself protected the device from his reach.

The silver SUV idled near the curb.

Marianne watched from inside.

Grant sat beside her, speaking on his phone.

Tyler stood several yards away, enjoying the moment.

“Nobody is coming to save you.”

He thought those words still worked.

They had once.

Before Kayla.

Before Mr. Alvarez.

Before the investigator’s secure address waited on my screen.

I lifted the phone.

“Check the screen.”

He stepped closer.

The upload package was ready.

No names visible.

No readable message.

Only the encrypted destination mark he had seen on a federal notice his father once left in the printer.

Tyler’s face went pale.
