Chapter 8

Marianne did not run toward me like a foster mother worried about a child struggling to breathe.

She ran toward the phone.

Her neutral-colored dress coat darkened in the rain.

Her heels slipped once in the mud, but she recovered without slowing.

“Give me that phone.”

Nearby students turned.

A security guard stepped from beneath the administration awning but hesitated when he recognized Marianne.

Everyone recognized Marianne.

That had protected her for years.

I pressed the final command.

A soft tone sounded.

“Too late. It sent.”

She stopped.

The rain streamed down her face, washing away the careful makeup around her eyes.

“Sent where?”

I did not answer.

Tyler grabbed my wrist.

The school nurse shouted from across the courtyard.

He released me immediately.

That was his mistake.

Not the release.

The speed.

It showed every witness he knew he should not have touched me.

Marianne reached for the phone.

I held it against my chest.

The security guard finally moved between us.

“Mrs. Vale, step back.”

Her expression shifted into public concern.

“She is having an episode. That device belongs to our family.”

“It belongs to me,” I said.

“You are a minor.”

“I am not your property.”

Students had begun recording.

Grant stepped from the SUV.

He looked at the broken glasses.

The inhaler in the puddle.

Tyler’s muddy sneaker.

Then at Marianne’s face.

He understood the public image problem before he understood the investigation.

“Everyone calm down,” he said.

My phone vibrated once.

Delivery confirmed.

At the same moment, Marianne’s phone illuminated.

A home-security alert.

Then another.

Grant’s device began ringing.

He checked the screen.

The composure left his face.

Across town, investigators were already standing outside the mansion.

The evidence package had not initiated the operation.

It confirmed the final conditions for one already prepared.

That was why they arrived so quickly.

The Vales believed I had summoned federal agents from a muddy school courtyard.

In reality, the agents had been waiting for proof that the records inside the house were still active.
