Chapter 1 - The Blanket Above the Podium

Graduate Raises the Baby Blanket His Birth Mother Abandoned Him In Before Opening the Hidden Letter That Exposes Why She Returned After Nineteen Years.
Simon stood behind the wooden podium with the old yellow baby blanket lifted high above his head.
The auditorium froze.
Graduates in black gowns sat in rows beneath the chandeliers.
Parents and relatives filled the seats behind them.
Teachers stood near the cake table with smiles that had died halfway across their faces.
The blanket was stained, thin, and worn soft from nineteen years of being folded, unfolded, hidden, and remembered.
Simon’s eyes were wet beneath his graduation cap.
His deep-red stole hung neatly over his black gown.
His speech folder lay open on the podium.
Inside it sat a folded letter he had not yet shown.
Denise rose from her seat in a sparkling silver gown, smartphone still clutched in her hand.
Her proud smile vanished.
“Simon, put that filthy blanket down.”
The microphone caught every word.
A ripple moved through the audience.
Simon lowered the blanket onto the podium slowly.
Then he looked directly at Denise.
His hands trembled, but his voice did not.
“This is what you left me wrapped in.”
Joanna sat near the aisle in her navy-blue lace dress, one hand pressed against her chest. Her eyes locked onto the blanket as if seeing it in the present might break something she had kept sealed for years.
Denise took one step toward the stage.
“Simon, this is not the place.”
Simon opened the graduation folder.
Dorothy’s face drained of color.
George gripped the arm of his chair and looked away from Denise.
Simon removed the folded letter.
“And this letter explains why you came back today.”
Joanna rose, tears spilling down her face.
“You don’t have to protect me anymore.”
Simon turned toward her.
For one heartbeat, the wounded graduate became a boy looking at the only mother who had stayed.
Then he faced Denise again.
“I’m not protecting you, Mom. I’m telling the truth.”
Denise lowered her phone.

And the auditorium became silent enough to hear the first fold of the hidden letter begin to open.
