Chapter 9 - The First Fold Opens
Simon placed the blanket gently on the podium.
Then he set the letter on top of it.
Old paper against old fabric.
Two things from the beginning of his life.
One had held his body.
The other held the reason someone had let him go.
His hands trembled.
Joanna watched him with tears and trust.
Denise stood frozen near the aisle, phone lowered at her side.
Dorothy sobbed into a tissue.
George looked like a man waiting for a sentence he had avoided for nineteen years.
Simon touched the first fold.
The paper was fragile.
He moved carefully.
No one breathed.
Denise whispered, “Simon.”
He paused.
Not because she commanded him.
Because part of him still wanted the woman who gave birth to him to say something that made the letter unnecessary.
Tell me now.
Tell me the truth before paper does.
Tell me you came back for me, not for whatever this says.
Tell me Joanna was never meant to be hurt.
Tell me I was not a prop for your return.
Denise said nothing.
Simon opened the first fold.
The audience leaned forward almost imperceptibly.
No contents were revealed yet.
No motive spoken.
Only the movement.
Old paper loosening after nineteen years.
Simon’s eyes remained on Denise, not the page.
“This is your chance,” he said.
Her face collapsed.
“I can explain.”
“Then explain why you came today.”
Denise’s mouth opened.
Closed.
She looked at Dorothy.
Then George.
Then Joanna.
Then the audience.
She had wanted witnesses when they admired her.
Now witnesses made honesty impossible.
Simon understood then.
Whatever the letter contained, Denise still wanted control more than truth.
His sadness settled into something steadier.
He looked at Joanna.
She nodded once.
Not telling him to continue.
Telling him she would still be there after he did.
Simon lowered his eyes to the letter.
His thumb moved beneath the second fold.
