Chapter 10 - Before the Hidden Letter Speaks
The letter’s contents were not revealed.
Denise’s real motive remained hidden.
No final family resolution happened.
No legal consequence arrived.
No one was removed from the auditorium.
The story ended inside the high school graduation auditorium in Columbus, Ohio, beneath chandeliers and warm lights, with graduates seated in black caps and gowns, shocked relatives holding their breath, and the cake table untouched near the wall.
Simon stood behind the wooden podium in his black graduation gown and deep-red stole.
His eyes were wet.
His hands trembled.
But his voice had carried farther than anyone expected.
The stained yellow baby blanket lay across the podium.
Beside it rested the partially unfolded old letter.
Joanna stood in the aisle in her navy-blue lace dress, tears running down her face, but her posture was steady now. She looked at Simon with heartbreak and pride, not possession.
Denise stood several steps from the stage in her sparkling silver gown, phone lowered, face pale with panic. Her proud return had collapsed into fear the moment Simon touched the hidden letter.
Dorothy and George sat nearby, no longer able to pretend they did not recognize what lay on the podium.
Simon looked from Joanna to Denise.
The room waited.
Then he spoke the words that ended the performance and began the truth.
“I’m not protecting you, Mom. I’m telling the truth.”
Joanna closed her eyes at the word Mom.
Denise flinched because she knew it had not been spoken to her.
Simon pressed the letter flat with one hand.
With the other, he began unfolding the next crease.
No one saw the contents.
No one heard the motive.
Not yet.
But Denise’s terrified face told the auditorium enough to understand the letter mattered.
The microphone remained open.
The blanket remained visible.
