Chapter 10 - why Vanessa screamed
Vanessa surrendered the next morning.
She arrived with an attorney and a flash drive.
“I want Sophie protected.”
Detective Morgan answered:
“She already is.”
“Then I’ll tell you everything.”
Vanessa admitted accessing Laura’s trust file improperly.
Admitted preparing custody drafts.
Admitted knowing Dennis took Sophie without Laura’s permission.
Admitted helping move the child.
She also admitted suggesting the attic.
Elmer watched without sympathy.
Vanessa cried.
“I thought if Sophie stayed with Elmer—even without him knowing—Dennis couldn’t take her across the border.”
Morgan stared.
“You locked a child in a wardrobe.”
“I didn’t lock it.”
“That distinction will not save you.”
“I know.”
“Why not simply call Elmer?”
“Dennis had my phone.”
“Police?”
“I was afraid.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
“Yes.”
Again the truth was ugly and simple.
Vanessa explained the scream heard on Dennis’s call.
When Elmer said, “Your daughter is safe,” Vanessa realized Sophie had been discovered.
“He found her?!” was not fear of the child being rescued.
It was shock that Dennis’s plan had collapsed sooner than expected.
“Why did you put the birth certificate in her bag?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because Martin wanted it destroyed.”
Elmer leaned forward.
Martin Cole.
Her own father.
“Why?”
“It proves Laura was alive after the fake death.”
Exactly.
“And you kept it?”
“I made a copy first.”
Vanessa’s flash drive contained scanned records from Martin’s office.
Emails.
Draft settlements.
Insurance documentation.
One especially damaging message:
Martin to Dennis:
If Sophie’s certified birth record surfaces, the California story is finished.
Dennis:
Then the record disappears.
Martin:
Records don’t disappear anymore. People do.
The room went silent.
Morgan read it again.
Martin later claimed the sentence referred to Laura changing identities.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
Another email appeared.
Dennis:
Dad can never see the certificate.
Martin:
Agreed. Elmer will choose the child over you.
Elmer closed his eyes.
Even Martin understood him better than Dennis did.
Vanessa said:
“My father told me Elmer would destroy our family if he learned the truth.”
Elmer stared at her.
“No. Your family did that itself.”
Vanessa nodded.
Police obtained enough evidence to charge her in connection with several nonviolent offenses while prosecutors evaluated her cooperation.
Martin faced expanding fraud allegations.
Dennis remained missing.
Then Vanessa provided his likely location.
A riverfront condominium owned by a shell company Martin used for clients.
Police moved.
Dennis was gone.
But he had left in a hurry.
Laptop open.
Clothes.
Cash.
Sophie’s passport application.
And a handwritten list:
Dad
Laura
Blue folder
Certificate
Sophie
Beside each except SOPHIE was a check mark.
Elmer felt cold.
“What does that mean?”
Nobody knew.
The laptop contained recent searches:
Can parent obtain emergency custody if mother presumed dead?
Can father amend child birth record?
How to challenge trust fiduciary after beneficiary incapacitated?
Morgan closed the screen.
Then another search:
ELMER STANLEY MEDICAL POWER OF ATTORNEY.
Elmer stared.
“Why was he looking at my medical power of attorney?”
Laura went pale.
“The trust.”
“What?”
“If I became unavailable and Sophie needed an emergency family guardian, I named you.”
Elmer stared.
“When?”
“Two years ago.”
She had legally designated Elmer as preferred temporary guardian despite being unable to contact him.
Dennis had apparently discovered that.
That explained the attic differently.
Not only hiding Sophie from Laura.
Placing Sophie physically inside Elmer’s home could help Dennis later claim Elmer had knowingly participated.
If police found the child concealed there without the security footage—
Elmer could look complicit.
Dennis may have been trying to discredit the very person Laura chose to protect Sophie.
Rosa’s unexpected cleaning visit had ruined it.
Then Morgan found a draft statement on Dennis’s laptop:
My father agreed to keep Sophie temporarily because Laura is dangerous.
Elmer’s fists tightened.
