Box 117 required a warrant.
Dennis refused consent.
The court authorized access based on evidence connecting the key to the fraud investigation.
Elmer waited at the police station with Laura.
Inside the box:
No money.
No jewelry.
Documents.
Original documents.
The first was Laura’s genuine passport.
The second was a certified copy of Sophie’s birth certificate.
The third was a sealed envelope marked:
ELMER STANLEY.
Elmer stared.
Dennis had stored something addressed to him.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Dennis.
From June Stanley.
Elmer’s late wife.
His hands shook.
June had died four years earlier.
The letter was dated five years ago.
Elmer,
I found a letter from Laura in Dennis’s things.
He told me she was dead.
I don’t believe him.
Elmer closed his eyes.
June knew.

Why had she never told him?
The next paragraph answered.
I confronted Dennis. He said Laura was mentally ill and that if you became involved, she would accuse you of helping her hide assets. I was afraid of what it would do to you.
Elmer whispered:
“No, June.”
Another person tried to protect him through silence.
Another secret that strengthened Dennis.
June continued.
I copied what I could and put it somewhere Dennis cannot destroy.
If I can confirm Laura is alive, I will tell you everything.
She never got the chance.
June died unexpectedly from a stroke the following year.
Elmer had never questioned it.

But Dennis had taken June’s letter and locked it away.

Elmer stared.
“That alone proves the death story.”
Morgan nodded.
“It’s significant.”

A private mediator required it during an attempted financial settlement.
The settlement failed.
Dennis hid the declaration.

The evidence tightened around both men.

“Who is that?” Elmer asked.
Laura went pale.

“Laura.”
She looked away.
“Rachel Hart.”
“Who?”
“My mother’s trust attorney before Martin.”
“Why does that scare you?”
Laura took a long breath.
“Rachel disappeared seven years ago.”
No death certificate.
No public practice.
Her law license became inactive.
Laura’s mother had trusted Rachel completely.
Then Martin took over.
The timing mattered.
Rachel left one year before Laura’s fake death.
Police traced her last known address.

Vacant.
Then a more recent financial transaction appeared.
Rachel Hart had paid annual rent on Box 117.
Not Dennis.
Elmer stared.
“Then why did Dennis have the key?”
Morgan answered:
“Maybe he took it.”
The box might not have been Dennis’s secret.

A missing attorney.
The box contained one final envelope.
FOR LAURA — IF SOPHIE IS FOUND.
Laura opened it.
Rachel’s handwriting.

Laura stared.
“What does that mean?”
The letter named no one else.

Detective Morgan pulled the forged certificate.
