Chapter 9 - the woman Elmer had mourned
Laura entered the police family room slowly.
Elmer stood.
Neither moved at first.
She looked older than thirty-six.
Fear did that to people.
But she was Laura.
Same hazel eyes.
Same small scar near her chin.
Same way she twisted her fingers when nervous.
“Elmer.”
His eyes filled.
“You’re alive.”
She began crying.
“I’m sorry.”
He crossed the room and hugged her.
For six years he had imagined ashes beneath the earth.
Now she was breathing against his shoulder.
“I wrote.”
“I found them.”
“He said you never answered.”
“I never got them.”
Laura closed her eyes.
“I know now.”
Then Sophie entered with Emily Park.
“Mommy!”
Laura dropped to her knees.
Sophie ran into her arms.
The reunion belonged to them.
Elmer turned away.
He did not need to hear every word.
Later, Laura gave her formal statement.
Dennis had not staged the California accident itself.
There had been no accident.
He simply invented one after Laura fled.
She left Portland following months of financial manipulation and escalating threats.
She intended to divorce him.
Then she discovered she was pregnant.
“Why didn’t you go to police immediately?” Morgan asked.
Laura looked ashamed.
“I had documents Dennis accessed without permission. Money moved. Threats that sounded terrible to me but vague to everyone else.”
“And the death story?”
“I didn’t know at first.”
She learned three months later when Dennis located her in Washington and said:
“Everyone has already buried you.”
Laura thought he was exaggerating.
Then he showed her Elmer’s memorial notice.
She understood Dennis had crossed into something far more dangerous.
“Why not expose him then?”
“He threatened to accuse me of insurance fraud.”
Morgan frowned.
“You didn’t collect anything.”
“No. But Dennis had moved money through an account with my name on it.”
He had created enough confusion that Laura feared arrest, custody loss, and retaliation.
Martin Cole reinforced those fears.
“Martin told me courts would see a woman hiding under an alias with a secret baby as unstable.”
“Did he threaten you?”
“He called it legal reality.”
Laura’s face hardened.
“Now I understand he was protecting Dennis.”
For years, Laura moved whenever Dennis found her.
Sometimes months passed without contact.
Then Dennis would appear.
Offer peace.
Ask for signatures.
Threaten custody.
Disappear again.
She documented everything.
Seven weeks ago, she finally contacted Morgan.
Then Vanessa accessed the trust address.
Dennis found her.
“He took Sophie outside school.”
Laura tried to follow.
Dennis forced her into another vehicle.
She was taken to Elmer’s Mount Hood cabin.
“Why there?”
“He said nobody would search his father’s property.”
Elmer’s jaw tightened.
Dennis used his trust as camouflage.
Laura continued.
At the cabin, Dennis demanded the fiduciary nomination.
Laura refused.
Vanessa argued with him.
“I think that was the first time Vanessa understood how much he had lied.”
“What happened to your head?”
Laura touched the healing cut.
“I tried to leave.”
She would not describe more while Sophie remained nearby.
Morgan did not push.
Dennis later drove Laura toward Portland, claiming he would release her if she signed.
At a gas station, she escaped.
She reached urgent care.
Then a shelter.
“Why didn’t you immediately contact police?”
Laura looked at Morgan.
“I thought Dennis still had Sophie.”
“He did.”
“I was afraid that if he knew I was free, he’d move her.”
So Laura hid until she knew Sophie was safe.
Elmer whispered:
“You should have trusted me.”
Laura looked at him.
“I wanted to.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
“Because Dennis had spent years showing me photographs of you.”
Elmer stared.
“He said if I pulled you into this, Martin could make it look like you helped me commit fraud.”
Laura cried.
“I kept telling myself protecting you meant staying away.”
Elmer shook his head.
“Secrets protected Dennis.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
No anger was needed.
She already understood.
Then Morgan asked about the woman screaming during Dennis’s phone call.
Vanessa.
Laura confirmed Vanessa had been at the cabin.
But she also said something unexpected.
“Vanessa tried to help Sophie.”
Elmer frowned.
“She helped hide her.”
“Yes.”
“Then how did she help?”
Laura explained.
Dennis initially planned to take Sophie directly out of Oregon.
Vanessa refused.
She told him a border crossing with an abducted child would destroy all of them.
She suggested Elmer’s attic as a temporary location.
Elmer’s anger returned.
“That is not helping.”
“No.”
Laura agreed.
“But Vanessa also slipped Sophie the birth certificate.”
Everyone went still.
“What?”
“Dennis took Sophie’s documents.”
Laura looked toward her daughter.
“Vanessa put the certificate back in Sophie’s backpack.”
That was why police found it.
Without that certificate, the first official clue to Laura’s survival might have remained hidden.
Vanessa had participated.
Then quietly planted evidence.
Why?
Fear?
Guilt?
A plan to cooperate?
