Dennis’s response was immediate.
“Leah lied to me.”
Maybe.
But that did not explain five years of forged custody, hidden records, stolen trust funds, or attic confinement.
His attorney insisted Dennis genuinely believed Sophie was his child.
Detective Cole asked:
“Then why refuse testing?”
Dennis looked away.

Elmer recognized the name.
Dennis’s college roommate.

“Why stop?”

Aaron had believed it.

“That child has had every adult title around her rewritten.”
Rosa nodded.
“Then we don’t rush another one.”
Aaron agreed.
He did not demand custody.
Did not ask Sophie to call him Dad.

“I want to know what she needs.”
Elmer studied him.
“She needs adults who stop making their needs the center.”
Aaron nodded.
“Then I’ll start there.”

“That’s him.”
Cole frowned.
“From where?”
“He came to Dennis’s house.”
“When?”
“The night Leah disappeared.”
Silence.
Trisha had never admitted that.
“What did he do?”
“He and Dennis talked in the garage.”
“Did Leah come home?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“I left.”
“You left?”
“I was scared.”
“Did you see Leah alive?”
“Yes.”
“What time?”
“Almost midnight.”
This was the latest confirmed sighting before the original disappearance.
“Did Keene leave?”
“Not before me.”
Dennis had been with Leah.
Martin Keene had been there.
Trisha left.
Leah vanished.

Detective Cole asked:

“Because it makes me look like I left Leah with them.”

Leah wrote:
M.K. says Dennis isn’t the father and therefore has no authority over Sophie’s Monroe interest. Dennis says paperwork matters more than blood.
Elmer felt cold.
Dennis knew.
