Chapter 7 - the sister who became Mom
Rachel Monroe nearly hung up when Detective Cole told her.
“Trisha?”
“You know her?”
“She’s my half sister too.”
Rachel sounded furious.
Their father had three daughters through two marriages.
Rachel and Leah grew up together.
Trisha lived mostly with her mother in California.
The sisters were never close.
But they knew one another.
Dennis had met Trisha through Leah.
Not independently.
Every version he told Elmer was fabricated.
Rachel flew to Portland.
When she saw Sophie, she began crying.
“You look like Leah.”
Sophie hid behind Elmer.
Rachel did not approach further.
“That’s okay,” she said. “You don’t know me yet.”
That mattered.
Nobody would demand instant family from a child already overwhelmed by adults claiming roles around her.
Rachel explained Leah’s final months.
Leah discovered Dennis and Trisha’s affair.
Trisha initially claimed Dennis told her the relationship with Leah was over.
When she learned Leah was pregnant, she tried to end it.
Dennis pulled her back in.
Money helped.
Then fear.
Then shame.
“Why didn’t Trisha tell us Leah was missing?” Cole asked.
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“She did.”
“What?”
Rachel opened an old email.
Sent from Trisha five years earlier.
LEAH IS SAFE. SHE DOES NOT WANT CONTACT. STOP LOOKING.
Trisha had actively shut down the family search.
When Rachel threatened police, another email arrived from Leah’s account saying:
Please leave me alone.
Rachel believed it reluctantly.
Now she knew the messages were false.
Then the box beneath Dennis’s staircase was recovered.
Inside were Sophie’s infant photographs.
Leah’s medical records.
Copies of the disputed paternity filing.
And Trisha’s journal.
Detective Cole read only portions relevant to the investigation.
Early entry:
Dennis says Leah left. I know he is lying about something.
Another:
Sophie cries constantly. I keep telling myself I am protecting her.
Later:
Pike says if I talk, they will make it look like I helped plan Leah’s disappearance.
And:
Maybe I did, just not the part I’m afraid of.
Elmer stared.
“What part?”
The next pages were missing.
Torn out.
But months later:
Sophie called me Mama today. I cried after she slept.
Then:
I have become the lie.
That sentence hit Rosa hardest.
For years Trisha may have loved Sophie.
She also allowed the lie to grow around her.
Both could be true.
Then a recent entry:
Sophie found Leah’s certificate.
Dennis says Elmer can never see it.
Pike wants the house transfer finished before the Monroe review reopens.
The Monroe review.
Detective Cole searched.
Leah’s family trust had scheduled a beneficiary verification after Sophie’s sixth birthday.
Sophie was five.
The review would require updated parentage documents.
If Leah remained missing and Dennis’s paternity unresolved, control of Sophie’s trust could move to an independent fiduciary.
Dennis would lose access.
That gave him a deadline.
And a reason to obtain Elmer’s house before the trust review.
Elmer finally saw the whole immediate plan.
Dennis had drained portions of Sophie’s trust for years.
When the sixth-birthday review threatened exposure, he needed replacement collateral.
Elmer’s property.
The deed transfer.
The capacity affidavit.
And when Sophie discovered Leah’s name, Dennis hid her where she could not tell Elmer.
The attic.
But one question remained.
Where was Leah?
Then Trisha’s journal gave a clue.
A recent line:
I saw her once after Dennis said she was gone.
Elmer’s pulse quickened.
Date:
Five years ago.
Two weeks after Leah’s reported disappearance.
Location:
St. Vincent Medical Center.
