Chapter 6 - why Dennis refused the test
Dennis was arrested that afternoon.
Police found him inside an apartment rented under Graham Pike’s assistant’s name.
Trisha was not with him.
Dennis faced immediate charges connected to Sophie’s confinement and alleged document fraud.
The missing-person investigation remained separate.
He asked for a lawyer.
Then refused to discuss Leah.
Detective Cole placed the paternity notation in front of him.
His face changed.
“Why was your paternity under review?”
Dennis said nothing.
“Did Leah doubt you were Sophie’s father?”
Still nothing.
His attorney stopped the questioning.
Elmer felt almost relieved.
Silence was better than another lie.
Then Leah’s old medical records clarified the issue.
Dennis had signed Sophie’s birth acknowledgment.
Leah later requested formal genetic confirmation during the custody dispute.
Not necessarily because she believed Dennis was not the father.
Her attorney had advised it after Dennis challenged several other facts in court preparation.
The test was scheduled.
Leah disappeared three days before it occurred.
Dennis never completed it.
Instead, he used the unconfirmed acknowledgment as though the dispute never existed.
Attorney Nathan Price said:
“That doesn’t mean he isn’t Sophie’s biological father.”
Elmer nodded.
“Then why hide it?”
“Because unresolved paternity could have complicated his custody story.”
Trisha remained missing.
Her mother Marianne finally admitted Trisha had called.
“She’s scared.”
“Of Dennis?” Detective Cole asked.
Marianne hesitated.
“Of Pike.”
Again Graham Pike.
Cole’s patience thinned.
“Everybody keeps pointing upward. Your daughter helped falsify family documents.”
“I know.”
“She screamed when police found Leah’s name.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
Marianne began crying.
“Because Trisha knows what happened after Leah disappeared.”
Elmer leaned forward.
“What happened?”
“I don’t know everything.”
“Tell us what you know.”
Three days after Leah vanished, Trisha received a call from Dennis.
He asked her to meet him at a motel near Salem.
When she arrived, Sophie was there.
Infant.
Dennis told Trisha Leah had left.
Trisha did not believe him.
“But she went with him anyway,” Elmer said.
Marianne nodded.
“She was already involved.”
Trisha helped Dennis build the appearance of a stable household.
She eventually married him.
She allowed Sophie to call her Mom.
She concealed Leah’s birth certificate.
Complicity accumulated year by year.
“But why is she afraid of Pike?” Cole asked.
Marianne looked toward her attorney.
“Because Pike arranged Leah’s ‘departure paperwork.’”
“What paperwork?”
Emails.
A fake rental termination.
A vehicle sale.
A resignation letter.
Documents intended to make it appear Leah voluntarily moved.
Graham Pike created a paper trail for a woman already missing.
That changed his role dramatically.
Police obtained more warrants.
Pike disappeared before they reached his home.
His passport remained.
Car remained.
Phone abandoned.
Another person running without going far.
Then Sophie remembered Trisha’s hiding place.
“Aunt Trisha has a box under the stairs.”
Nobody had ever heard Sophie call her Aunt Trisha before.
The child specialist asked:
“Why did you call her that?”
Sophie looked confused.
“That’s what she told me when she was crying.”
“When?”
“The day Daddy took me to Grandpa’s.”
“What did she say?”
Sophie hugged her rabbit.
“She said, ‘I should’ve been your aunt, not your mom.’”
Elmer stared through the observation glass.
Aunt.
Not stepmother?
Did Trisha mean emotionally—
or literally?
Records showed Trisha’s full maiden name:
Trisha Monroe Holt.
Leah Monroe.
Same surname.
Detective Cole checked birth records.
The answer arrived within minutes.
Trisha and Leah were half sisters.
Same father.
Different mothers.
Elmer stopped breathing.
For five years, Trisha had not merely raised the missing woman’s child.
