Chapter 10 - MY MOTHER’S REAL FEARMom’s motive was different.

She cared about control.

Not only the company.

Legacy.

She visited once after Dad.

I nearly refused.

Then allowed twenty minutes.

She did not touch Kirk.

Even though I had not prohibited it.

That hurt in a way I did not expect.

She sat across from me.

“You made us look monstrous.”

“You called him fatherless.”

“You refused to tell us.”

“That did not make him fatherless.”

“We had no proof.”

“He had a father whether you had paperwork or not.”

She looked toward Kirk’s bassinet.

“Alistair Sanders is not family.”

“He is Kirk’s father.”

“He is a competitor.”

“Those are different categories.”

“Not when inheritance is involved.”

There.

“What inheritance?”

“If something happens to you, your shares could eventually pass into a household influenced by him.”

“He does not own Kirk.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes.”

I did.

She feared Alistair’s influence over the next generation more than she feared losing me.

That was the wound.
