Chapter 22 - MY MOTHER HOLDS KIRKIt happened when he was four months old.

I did not plan it.
Mom came to my house for a facilitated family conversation.
Dad refused to attend.
She sat on the sofa.
Kirk woke.
He cried.
I picked him up.
Mom stared.
Then said:
“May I?”
I almost said no.
Maybe I wanted to.
Then I asked:
“Do you understand why I might?”
“Yes.”
“What did you call him?”
Her eyes closed.
“Fatherless.”
“Was he?”
“No.”
“Would it matter if Alistair had disappeared tomorrow?”
She looked confused.
I continued:
“Would Kirk be less worthy if his father abandoned him?”
“No.”
“Then say what you did wrong.”
She took a long breath.
“I used his parentage to punish you.”
Closer.
“And?”
“I made affection conditional.”
Yes.
I handed him over.
She cried when he grabbed her necklace.
May you like
I did not comfort her.
The moment belonged to Kirk.
