PART 4
James Harlan continued reading the letter while Ethan stood rigid beside Lauren.
Lauren held the baby tighter.
For the first time since Claire entered the office, she looked unsure.
The newborn slept against her chest, innocent of every adult lie that had carried him into that room.
James adjusted his glasses.
His voice remained even.
“My dear Claire.”
“If you are hearing this, I have gone where Ethan can no longer interrupt me.”
A strangled sound left Ethan’s throat.
James did not stop.
“I asked that Lauren and the child be present not because I approve of what my son has done, but because lies thrive best in separate rooms.”
“Today, I wanted every lie under one roof.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
He could not meet her eyes.
James turned the page.
“Ethan, you were given love and mistook it for permission.”
“You were given comfort and mistook it for entitlement.”
“You were given a wife who cared for me better than my own son did, and you repaid her by bringing another woman into my family while she carried the weight of your absence.”
Lauren snapped, “This is cruel.”
James looked up.
“Miss Hayes, you were invited to listen, not revise.”
Lauren’s mouth closed.
Claire almost laughed.
Almost.
James continued.
“I know about the apartment on Kingsbury Avenue.”
“I know about the account used to pay for it.”
“I know about the doctor’s appointment you attended on March seventeenth.”
“I know about the necklace purchased with money Ethan told Claire was for my medical bills.”
Claire’s body went cold.
She turned toward Ethan.
“The necklace?”
Ethan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Lauren looked down.
That confirmed it.
Claire remembered writing that check.
Ethan had said Margaret’s out-of-network treatment required immediate payment.
Claire had emptied part of her emergency savings without hesitation.
A week later, Lauren posted a cropped photo wearing a diamond pendant.
Claire had noticed it.
Then told herself not to be paranoid.
James placed another folder on the desk.
“There are receipts.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“James, this is not part of the will.”
James looked at him.
“It is part of your mother’s final instructions.”
Ethan’s face reddened.
“My mother was sick.”
James’s voice sharpened.
“Your mother was dying.”
“She was not stupid.”
The room went quiet again.
Claire looked at the legal folders.
At the baby.
At Lauren.
At Ethan.
Then at the letter in James’s hand.
Margaret had not only known Ethan was cheating.

She knew he had used Claire’s money to fund it.
