PART 8

James handed Claire the private letter.

The envelope was cream-colored.

Her name was written across the front in Margaret’s sharp, elegant handwriting.

Claire held it for a long moment before opening it.

Ethan stared like he could burn it through will alone.

Lauren rocked the baby softly, now pale and silent.

Claire unfolded the letter.

James did not read this one.

Margaret had meant it for Claire’s voice alone.

Claire read silently at first.

Then, halfway down the page, her lips trembled.

James offered water.

She shook her head.

Then she began to read aloud.

Not for Ethan.

For herself.

“Claire.”

“I owe you an apology before I owe you an inheritance.”

“I saw what my son was becoming long before you did.”

“I told myself he was selfish, not cruel.”

“I told myself marriage would settle him.”

“I told myself a good woman might make him better.”

“That was not fair to you.”

Claire stopped.

Her tears fell freely now.

The room did not move.

She continued.

“I raised a man who learned to receive care without respecting the person giving it.”

“That is my failure.”

“But it will not be your sentence.”

Ethan’s face twisted.

“Stop.”

Claire did not.

“If he brings Lauren and the child to the reading, do not let the pain convince you that you have been replaced.”

“You have not been replaced.”

“You have been released.”

Lauren looked down.

Ethan backed away one step.

Claire read the final paragraph with a voice that steadied as it went.

“Take the house if you want peace.”

“Sell it if you want freedom.”

“Keep the company if you want power.”

“Walk away from all of it if you want rest.”

“But do not stay married to a man who needed my death to tell the truth.”

“And do not confuse being wounded with being defeated.”

Claire lowered the letter.

The city skyline blurred behind the windows.

For the first time that morning, she did not feel like a wife abandoned in public.

She felt like a witness handed the final key.

Ethan said, “She poisoned you against me.”

Claire looked up.

“No.”

“She named what you were.”

Lauren whispered, “Ethan…”

He turned on her.

“What?”

“You said your mother hated Claire.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

Lauren’s voice shook.

“You said she wanted me here.”

James closed the binder.

“She did want you here.”

Lauren looked confused.

James added, “So you could hear the truth before making any more choices based on Ethan’s lies.”

Lauren looked at the baby in her arms.

Then at Ethan.

Something in her expression changed.

Not remorse yet.

Fear.
