PART 9

Lauren asked for a break.

That alone nearly made Ethan lose control.

“No.”

He turned on her like the room still belonged to him.

“We are not doing this.”

Lauren held the baby closer.

“I need to speak to my attorney.”

Claire stared at her.

“You have an attorney?”

Lauren looked ashamed.

Only briefly.

“I thought I needed one because of you.”

Claire almost laughed.

“Because of me?”

Ethan spoke quickly.

“Lauren, stop.”

She ignored him.

“He told me you would try to take custody away from us.”

The room went very still.

Claire looked at the baby.

Then at Ethan.

“What?”

Lauren’s voice shook.

“He said you were unstable.”

“He said after the miscarriages, you became obsessed with having a child.”

“He said if you found out about the baby, you might hurt us legally.”

Claire felt that one like a blade.

Not because it was believable.

Because Ethan had used the most private grief of their marriage as a weapon against another woman.

James’s face hardened.

Ethan said, “That’s not what I meant.”

Claire stood.

Her chair pushed back softly against the carpet.

“You told your mistress I was dangerous because I lost pregnancies?”

Ethan looked away.

Lauren’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t know.”

Claire turned toward her.

“You knew he was married.”

Lauren flinched.

“Yes.”

“That part you knew.”

Lauren nodded.

The baby began to fuss.

She rocked him, tears slipping down her face now.

“I knew enough to be wrong.”

That answer did not heal anything.

But it was honest.

Honesty was rare in that room.

James placed one final document on the desk.

“Margaret also included a protection clause.”

Ethan’s head snapped up.

James continued.

“If Ethan attempts to weaponize the child, defame Claire regarding fertility loss, contest the will on grounds of bloodline, or conceal financial misconduct, all suspended distributions convert permanently to charitable trust.”

Ethan stared at him.

“She can’t control me from the grave.”

James looked at the folders.

“She already is.”

Claire turned to Ethan.

For years, she had waited for him to apologize in a way that changed something.

Now she no longer wanted it.

An apology from Ethan would only be another performance begging for a softer consequence.

She picked up Margaret’s private letter and placed it carefully in her handbag.

Then she looked at James.

“What do I need to sign today?”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Claire, wait.”

She looked at him with calm eyes.

“No.”

“That is what I did for years.”

“I waited.”

She glanced at Lauren, then the baby, then back at him.

“Today, I move.”
