Chapter 1 - The Man on the Marble StepsMichael Bennett knew something was wrong before he reached the mansion.

Heavy rain swept across the private driveway, turning the marble steps into shining gray mirrors. Every curtain in the enormous house was closed despite the bright afternoon. Audrey’s damaged car sat crooked near the garage, one headlight shattered and the driver’s door dented inward.

Her purse was still visible on the passenger seat.

Audrey never left her purse in the car.

Michael slowed beneath the rain, his suit jacket already soaked through. He had driven from downtown after receiving a call that lasted only four seconds.

No words.

Just Audrey’s strained breathing, a muffled impact, and the connection cutting off.

He had called back fourteen times.

No answer.

The police dispatcher advised him to wait nearby until officers arrived, but waiting outside while his daughter might be injured was impossible. Michael kept the emergency operator connected through his phone as he approached the entrance.

Julian stood at the top of the marble steps.

A baseball bat rested across his shoulder.

He wore dark trousers and a pale dress shirt with the sleeves rolled neatly to his elbows, as though he had stepped away from an ordinary family discussion. His hair remained perfectly styled despite the chaos visible around him.

He smiled when he saw Michael.

Not warmly.

Possessively.

“This is a private family matter,” Julian said. “Your daughter had to be disciplined.”

Michael stopped three steps below him.

Every instinct inside him demanded movement.

The older part of him—the father who had carried Audrey through childhood fevers and taught her to drive—wanted to rush past Julian and tear through every locked door in the mansion.

But Michael had spent forty years as a corporate attorney. He understood evidence. He understood how quickly violent men transformed themselves into victims when witnesses arrived.

His smartphone remained in his wet hand.

The emergency call was still connected.

The recording application was running.

Michael looked past Julian toward the mansion entrance.

The white front door stood open by several inches. A thin line of darkness separated it from the frame.

“Where is Audrey?”

Julian lowered the bat from his shoulder.

His hands tightened around it.

Behind him, the foyer looked undisturbed. A marble table remained decorated with white flowers. Framed photographs lined the wall. Nothing appeared stolen.

Then Michael saw Audrey’s pale hand press briefly against an upstairs window.

It vanished almost immediately.

Michael’s face remained controlled, but his heart began pounding painfully.

Julian followed his gaze and stepped sideways, blocking the window from view.

“She became emotional,” he said. “My parents are helping her calm down.”

Michael raised his phone slightly, pretending to check the screen.

In reality, he wanted the microphone closer.

“Did you hurt her?”

Julian laughed.

“I corrected her.”

A movement appeared behind him.

Arthur and Miriam emerged from the foyer.

Arthur’s gray hair was damp around his temples. Miriam wore an immaculate navy dress and pearl earrings, her expression cold enough to make the mansion seem warmer by comparison.

Miriam looked directly at Michael.

“She became hysterical after Julian corrected her behavior.”

A muffled cry came from upstairs.

Miriam’s confidence faltered.

Only for a moment.

But Michael saw it.

So did the emergency dispatcher listening through his phone.

Michael stepped onto the next marble stair.

Julian lifted the bat.

Rainwater ran from Michael’s hair into his eyes, but he did not blink.

Behind the mansion gates, sirens began rising through the storm.

Julian did not hear them yet.

Michael did.

And for the first time since arriving, he knew Audrey was no longer alone.

👉 Julian believed the bat kept Michael outside, but every word he spoke was already becoming evidence.
