Chapter 3 - The Bat Hits the StoneJulian swung toward Michael’s shoulder.

The movement was fast, but anger made it obvious.
Michael stepped outside the bat’s path and caught Julian’s forearm with both hands. He did not punch him. He did not attempt to overpower him. He redirected the swing downward and released him immediately.
The bat struck the wet marble.
The sharp metallic crack echoed across the entrance.
Julian lost his balance.
Two officers rushed up the steps before he could recover.
Officer Grant seized his right arm while Officer Ellis controlled the left. Julian twisted violently, shouting that Michael had attacked him.
The bat rolled down two steps and stopped against the iron railing.
Arthur recoiled toward the foyer.
Miriam covered her mouth.
Michael did not remain to watch.
He ran through the open door.
“Audrey!”
The foyer smelled of expensive candles and rain blowing in from outside. The polished marble floor reflected the flashing police lights. Nothing downstairs appeared damaged except for one overturned chair near the staircase.
Michael took the stairs two at a time.
Behind him, he heard officers ordering Arthur and Miriam to remain in the foyer.
Every upstairs door was closed.
The first bedroom was empty.
The second was locked.
Michael struck it with his palm.
“Audrey?”
A weak sound answered from beyond it.
He turned the handle again.
Locked from the hallway side with an old-fashioned brass key.
The key remained inside the lock.
Michael twisted it and pushed the door open.
Audrey was not inside.
The room contained only a broken lamp, a length of torn curtain cord, and one of her low heels.
Michael’s fear sharpened.
Someone had moved her.
A faint scrape came from farther down the corridor.
He followed it.
At the end of the hallway, Audrey lay collapsed beside a narrow console table. She had apparently dragged herself from another room after hearing the police below.
Her cream blouse was torn at one sleeve. Restrained bruising marked her face and arms. One wrist was red where something had held it tightly.
Her breathing was shallow.
Michael dropped to his knees.
“Audrey.”
Her eyelids moved.
He touched her neck and found a pulse.
Relief struck so violently that his hands began trembling.
Until then, discipline had carried him. Once he knew she was alive, the father inside him took over.
He gathered her carefully, supporting her neck and protecting the injured arm.
Audrey opened her eyes.
For a second, she did not recognize him.
Then her face softened.
“Dad… they locked me in.”
Michael’s expression broke.
“I know, sweetheart. I have you.”
Officer Ellis appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Paramedics are coming inside.”
Michael lifted Audrey gently.
She cried out when her weight shifted.
He froze.
“Where does it hurt?”
“My ribs.”
He adjusted his hold and carried her toward the staircase.
Below, Julian was restrained near the entrance. Rain blew across the foyer from the open door. Arthur and Miriam stood against the wall, their faces pale beneath the flashing lights.
Julian saw Audrey in Michael’s arms.
He stopped struggling.
Then he began shouting.
“She did this to herself!”
Audrey flinched.
Michael turned his body, shielding her from Julian’s view.
“Don’t listen to him.”
As he reached the driveway, paramedics moved toward them with a stretcher. Michael lowered himself onto the wet stone while still holding Audrey.
The final composition matched the nightmare he would remember forever: Audrey weak against his chest, Julian restrained several yards away, Arthur and Miriam frozen behind him, the bat abandoned near the steps.
Julian pointed toward Audrey.
“She is lying!”
Michael raised his smartphone.
The recording indicator remained active.
“You confessed on record.”
Julian’s rage collapsed.
His face emptied of color.
Miriam’s hand rose to her mouth.
Arthur stared at the phone as though it were a weapon more dangerous than the bat.
Audrey rested her head against Michael’s shoulder.
Behind them, the paramedics opened their equipment.
The rain continued falling.
May you like
But Julian was no longer smiling.
👉 Michael had recorded the confession, yet Audrey’s missing phone contained the evidence the entire family had tried to erase.
