Chapter 5 - The Video in the CloudThe smartphone itself was badly damaged.

Its memory chip had cracked when someone threw it against the upstairs wall. Local files were incomplete, and several recordings appeared corrupted.
But Audrey had enabled automatic cloud backup years earlier.
Julian knew enough to smash the phone.
He did not know enough to stop the upload.
Digital investigators recovered a video recorded forty minutes before Michael arrived.
The image began inside the mansion’s dining room.
Audrey had hidden the phone inside her partially open purse, leaving only a narrow view across the table.
Julian paced near the curtains.
Arthur sat with the transfer documents arranged before him.
Miriam remained beside the door, preventing Audrey from leaving.
Their voices were unmistakable.
Arthur told Audrey that Hawthorne’s debts had to become her responsibility because Julian’s future depended on it.
Audrey refused.
Miriam called her selfish.
Julian said marriage meant sharing consequences.
Then Audrey asked the question that changed the atmosphere.
“What happened to the money from the loans?”
Silence followed.
Arthur ordered Julian to take her phone.
The image shook as Audrey grabbed the purse.
Julian’s face briefly filled the screen.
His expression was not embarrassed.
It was terrified.
Audrey had discovered that millions were missing.
The remainder of the video captured fragments: Julian twisting her wrist, Miriam telling him not to bruise her face, Arthur warning that police would believe a wealthy husband before an “unstable wife.”
The recording ended when the phone struck the floor.
Michael listened inside Detective Ruiz’s office.
By the final seconds, his hands were clenched so tightly his fingernails marked his palms.
Ruiz stopped the playback.
“This establishes conspiracy and unlawful confinement. It also supports financial fraud.”
“Will it be enough?”
“It is significant evidence. But their attorneys will challenge context, editing, and Audrey’s interpretation.”
Michael looked at her.
“They are on video.”
“People challenge what is visible every day.”
He understood.
Evidence was not magic. It still had to survive procedure, defense strategies, and public narratives.
Arthur and Miriam had already hired separate attorneys. Both claimed they were attempting to calm a marital dispute. Arthur denied knowledge of the forged loans. Miriam said her warning about bruising had been taken out of context.
Julian claimed Audrey attacked him first.
Then police processed the baseball bat.
Only Julian’s fingerprints were present.
The mansion’s exterior camera showed him carrying it to the entrance six minutes before Michael arrived.
He had not picked it up impulsively when he saw a threat.
He had prepared to block the door.
Audrey gave her first formal statement the next morning.
Michael waited outside until she finished.
When Detective Ruiz emerged, she looked exhausted.
“How did she do?”
“She told the truth.”
Michael entered the room.
Audrey’s face was pale, but her eyes were clearer.
“I remembered something,” she said.
“What?”
“They were waiting for someone else.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know. Arthur kept saying the notary would arrive before dark.”
Michael looked toward Ruiz.
A notary meant they had planned to authenticate Audrey’s signature after forcing it.

If that person could be identified, the conspiracy extended beyond the mansion.
👉 Audrey’s attackers had prepared a legal-looking transfer, and the missing notary could expose how many people were willing to help them steal her life.
