Chapter 19 - THE MATERNITY WARD BENEATH THE CHURCHThe church had been closed for eleven years.

Its roof had collapsed after an electrical fire, but the stone foundation remained intact among overgrown trees south of Tacoma.

Detective Ortiz found no public record of a basement.

Thomas described an underground entrance behind the cemetery’s oldest mausoleum.

He agreed to accompany investigators under guard.

Emma remained in the mobile command unit with Dr. Patel.

Lauren insisted on coming.

Her labor had been stopped, but her body remained weak.

“You almost lost the pregnancy hours ago,” Dr. Patel warned.

“I gave birth there,” Lauren said. “I know which doors are false.”

“You also experienced trauma there.”

“That is why Victor believes I will stay away.”

Emma studied her sister.

She wanted to order Lauren to remain at the hospital.

The impulse frightened her.

Control often arrived disguised as concern.

“What do you need to enter safely?” Emma asked instead.

Lauren requested a medical escort, no sedatives without direct explanation, and the right to leave at any moment.

Dr. Patel agreed.

The mausoleum opened into a service elevator.

Below the cemetery lay a preserved maternity residence with six patient rooms, a surgical suite, a nursery, and a chapel designed for private guardianship ceremonies.

Nothing inside carried Victor’s name.

Every document identified the medical owner as the Lane Maternal Protection Foundation.

Amanda’s former foundation.

She stared at the records.

“He built this beneath my legal authority.”

Lauren answered without looking at her.

“And you never inspected what your signature owned.”

Amanda did not defend herself.

The team reached the nursery.

Five bassinets stood empty.

The sixth contained medical blankets arranged around a small speaker.

A newborn’s cry played from it.

Lauren stopped breathing.

“That sound.”

“What?” Emma asked.

“They played that after they took Ellie. Whenever I asked to see her, they played crying through the wall.”

Victor had trained Lauren to believe her child remained close while moving Ellie between guardians.

The speaker activated again.

This time, Ellie’s five-year-old voice said:

“Lauren?”

Emma checked the guardian’s secure connection.

Ellie was safe.

The voice in the nursery had been copied from their recent call.

Victor was still monitoring every system around them.

Thomas led Ortiz toward a hidden records room.

The door accepted his palm.

Inside were embryo files, gestational contracts, psychological assessments, and replacement plans.

One wall displayed photographs of Emma and Lauren from infancy to adulthood.

Another displayed Rachel Voss being trained to imitate Amanda.

A third contained images of a pregnant woman with Emma’s face.

Not Lauren.

Her jawline was slightly narrower.

Her eyes were the wrong shade of brown.

Surgical markings surrounded the photograph.

SUBSTITUTE EMMA—FINAL CERTIFICATION.

The woman’s original name was Rebecca Shaw.

She had entered a cosmetic reconstruction program after a factory accident. Victor offered free treatment in exchange for temporary legal work.

Instead, he altered her face repeatedly until she resembled Emma.

Medical logs showed Rebecca was thirty-four weeks pregnant.

The embryo record identified the genetic mother as Eleanor Lane.

The father was Thomas Hart.

Emma looked toward her husband’s body-camera feed.

Thomas leaned against the wall.

“I did not know he used Eleanor’s sample.”

“You gave him permission to use yours,” Emma said.

“He said the sample would confirm my relationship to Ellie.”

“Did you read the authorization?”

“No.”

The word sounded small after everything it had enabled.

Lauren found Rebecca restrained inside a recovery room.

She was conscious but heavily medicated.

When she saw Emma, terror crossed her reconstructed face.

“I didn’t agree to become you permanently.”

Emma crouched several feet from the bed.

“You are not me.”

“Victor says the court will believe the first woman who gives birth.”

“The court will hear your real name.”

“He erased it.”

“Then we rebuild it.”

Rebecca began crying.

She had been told her original family refused contact. Ortiz’s team discovered that Victor had intercepted every letter they sent.

The forced pregnancy used an embryo created from Eleanor’s archived reproductive material and Thomas’s genetic sample.

Victor had designed another Lane descendant with Thomas as the controllable parent.

If Ellie failed, Rebecca’s baby could replace her.

If Lauren refused, Rebecca could replace Emma.

If Emma’s natural pregnancy activated the trust, Victor could present three competing children and demand permanent administration while courts determined identity.

A door slammed deeper inside the facility.

Ortiz pursued a moving figure through the chapel corridor.

Victor appeared briefly on camera carrying the oldest receipt and Jonathan’s original amendment.

Thomas shouted:

“There!”

Victor entered the underground crypt and sealed the door.

Lauren remembered another passage from the night Ellie was born.

“It leads to the river.”

Federal agents surrounded the exit.

They found Victor’s coat beside an empty boat.

He had escaped again.

But he left the amendment.

Not accidentally.

The document appeared complete.

It transferred the founder shares to the survivor board whenever overlapping identities were proven.

Amanda prepared to authenticate it.

Lauren stopped her.

“Victor wanted us to find this.”

Forensic light revealed a final clause printed in disappearing ink.

The survivor board required the consent of every living person legally registered as Emma Lane.

Public Emma.

Lauren.

Rebecca.

And one additional identity.

EMMA LANE C.

No photograph accompanied the name.

The file showed only an active biometric credential and a recent address.

The Lane company headquarters.

Emma looked toward Amanda.

“Who has been running the company while we were here?”

Amanda checked the emergency board registry.

Her access had been removed twenty minutes earlier.

A woman using Emma Lane C’s credentials had taken control of every company account.

Then the headquarters security system sent a live image.

Olivia Dane stood inside Jonathan’s former office.

Beside her was a woman wearing Emma’s face.

Olivia looked directly into the camera and said:

“Victor was never the only person Jonathan asked to preserve a daughter.”

👉 Rebecca and her unborn baby were rescued, but a third legal Emma seized control of the Lane company—with Olivia Dane standing willingly beside her.
