Chapter 7 - THE CLAUSE VICTOR MISSEDVictor believed the founder shares could still be transferred.
He had drafted most of the Lane Trust and knew every visible condition.
He did not know about the private amendment Emma’s father created with Amanda.
The amendment activated when an unknown descendant was discovered under coercive circumstances. It froze all direct transfers and placed control with an emergency survivor board.
Emma could not give Victor the shares even if she wanted to.
Amanda advised keeping that secret while police searched for the yacht.
Emma disagreed.
“Tell him the shares are frozen.”
“He may panic.”
“He is already holding a child.”
“He may harm her if the leverage disappears.”
“He may also keep moving her while believing leverage exists.”
Amanda looked at her.
“What do you choose?”
“I refuse his question.”
Emma recorded a message.
“Victor, the shares cannot be transferred. Ellie is not a key, a beneficiary code, or evidence of Thomas’s rights. She is a child. Release her, and your cooperation will be documented. Keep her, and every hidden account becomes public.”
Victor responded within minutes.
“You sound like your father.”
Emma watched the gray sea through the penthouse windows.
“My father trusted you.”
“Your father used people and called it protection.”
“So did you.”
“He created a trust so complex that every person near you became a suspect.”
“And you proved him right.”
Victor sent coordinates for a meeting at a private marina. He demanded Amanda come alone with the original trust binder.
Police prepared a controlled operation.
Amanda insisted on carrying the binder.
Emma stopped her.
“You have made enough decisions for me.”
“This is my responsibility.”
“Why?”
Amanda hesitated.
Victor’s hidden voice on the recorder had not surprised her because she had been communicating with him for months.
She claimed she did so to gather evidence.
“How much did you tell him?” Emma asked.
“Enough to make him believe I would support a temporary transfer.”
“Did you know about Ellie?”
“No.”
“Did you know Thomas planned to drug me?”
“I learned three days ago.”
“And waited.”
“Yes.”
Amanda had removed the pills and secured the recorder, but she allowed the confrontation to proceed because she wanted Victor’s voice tied directly to the plan.
Emma thought of every adult who claimed a future result justified present danger.
“You are not going to the marina alone.”
A tactical team surrounded the area while Amanda approached the designated slip.
Victor never appeared.
The yacht floated empty beside the dock.
Inside, officers found Ellie’s stuffed fox, a tablet, and a life jacket sized for a child.
The tablet played a prerecorded message.
Victor sat beside Ellie.
“She is safe because I understand what your family trust was built to prevent.”
Emma leaned toward the screen.
“What does that mean?”
Victor continued.
“Jonathan Lane did not create the emergency descendant clause for Emma’s future children. He created it because another daughter already existed.”
Amanda went pale.
Emma turned toward her.
“You knew?”
Amanda whispered, “Not like this.”
Victor displayed a birth certificate.
The child named on it was Amanda Lane.
Emma’s father was listed as her biological father.
Amanda was not merely his former chief financial officer.
