Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR WHO CALLED VICTOR FIRSTEmma’s obstetrician, Dr. Caroline Reed, denied releasing the ultrasound.

She spoke with police from her clinic shortly after dawn.

“Mrs. Hart’s chart is protected.”

“Someone obtained the image before she did,” Detective Ortiz replied.

“That is impossible.”

Amanda turned her laptop toward the camera.

The clinic’s portal showed an administrator login at 2:13 a.m. Three files were downloaded: the ultrasound, bloodwork confirming pregnancy, and a physician’s note describing Emma’s fatigue.

The login belonged to Dr. Reed’s office manager.

The office manager had resigned the previous morning.

Her final direct deposit came from Brightwell Educational Consulting.

Thomas’s shell company had been paying a clinic employee.

Emma sat in the penthouse study while officers continued processing the dining room.

“What would they have done if I hadn’t announced the pregnancy?”

Amanda answered carefully.

“Victor planned to submit the competency transfer before the clinic formally recorded your pregnancy with the trust.”

“It was already in my medical chart.”

“The Lane Trust requires independent verification. Your father added that clause after a former executive fabricated a pregnancy during an inheritance dispute.”

Emma remembered her father’s obsession with safeguards.

Every safeguard had become another door Victor knew how to manipulate.

Once a pregnancy was independently registered, Emma’s voting shares could not be transferred to a spouse through divorce, incapacity, or temporary guardianship. Control would move to an external trustee until the child’s birth.

Thomas had less than twenty-four hours.

That explained the dinner.

The pills.

The signatures.

The staged accusations about spending.

They needed Emma to appear unstable and financially reckless before the pregnancy became legally protected.

“Who is the external trustee?” Emma asked.

Amanda did not answer immediately.

Emma noticed.

“Who?”

“You.”

“That makes no sense.”

“Your father created a separate legal identity for the trustee role. It is held through a foundation you control but have never activated.”

“Why hide it from me?”

“He believed knowledge would make you a target.”

Emma stood.

“I became a target without knowledge.”

Amanda lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

The trust documents showed that Emma could activate the independent foundation with a biometric signature and the unborn child’s verified medical report.

Amanda had brought the report.

“What happens once I sign?”

“Thomas loses every proxy connected to your assets. Victor loses authority over the trust. An automatic forensic review begins.”

Emma signed.

Across the penthouse, Thomas’s smartphone began producing alerts.

His company accounts froze.

The building card registered in his name deactivated.

Brightwell’s bank transfers stopped.

Brenda screamed from the dining room.

Margaret demanded to speak with Victor.

Victor did not answer.

Minutes later, news arrived that he had left his office carrying two briefcases and boarded a private car toward the airport.

Police issued an alert.

Amanda examined the frozen trust records.

The activation exposed an additional payment stream.

For five years, money had moved from Emma’s personal account to Asterwell Clinical Services under the description prenatal wellness consultation.

Emma had not been pregnant during most of those years.

“What were they buying?” she asked.

Amanda opened the attached invoices.

Private blood tests.

Hormonal records.

Embryo-storage fees.

Psychological assessments.

Every appointment belonged to Emma.

Thomas had been purchasing copies of her fertility history.

Then one payment appeared under a different patient code.

B. Hart—gestational services.

Brenda’s name.

Brenda watched Emma read it and whispered:

May you like

“That has nothing to do with you.”

👉 Brenda’s secret medical account connected the financial scheme to Emma’s fertility treatment—and Thomas looked terrified that she had discovered it.
