Chapter 10 - THE DAUGHTER WHO SIGNED THE ORDERHannah’s signature was genuine.

Not visually copied.

Not inserted from an old document.

The authorization included her fingerprint, voice confirmation, and facial scan.

The recording showed Hannah seated inside a medical office six months earlier.

She appeared awake.

Dr. Thomas Ward stood beside her.

The investigator now handling the case.

On-screen, Ward asked:

“Do you authorize escalation if Martin fails the first instruction?”

Hannah answered:

“Yes.”

She stared at the video.

“I have never been in that room.”

Ward’s face changed.

“That isn’t me.”

The man in the recording had his face, voice, and mannerisms.

But he wore a wedding ring Ward had never owned.

Identity substitution had reached the investigator.

The recorded Hannah looked authentic too.

Yet she used her left hand to sign.

Hannah was right-handed.

A woman had been trained to become her.

The family did not contain only substitutes for Evelyn, Clara, and Eleanor.

Someone had created another Hannah.

The second protective sister authorized the garage escalation.

She may also have manipulated Ward into the investigation, ensuring the evidence reached the hospital rather than disappearing inside local police files.

The real Ward checked his assignment history.

He had not chosen the Reed case.

A federal supervisor transferred it to him thirty minutes before Clara was found.

The supervisor’s authorization came from Father Foundation.

The organization controlled both the crime and the investigation.

Every revelation had been scheduled.

Martin’s confession.

The hidden hospital wing.

Faith’s underground room.

Evelyn’s reappearance.

Someone wanted the Reed family to discover the truth in a precise order.

Clara gripped Hannah’s wrist.

“Mom knew you would come.”

“How?”

“She visited me last month.”

Hannah stared.

Clara had hidden the meeting because Evelyn threatened to remove her oxygen access if she told anyone.

Evelyn claimed she had spent nine years dismantling Voss Continuity from inside. The institute still controlled judges, hospitals, guardianship companies, and medical trusts.

She could not expose it through ordinary channels.

She needed Martin, the twins, Faith, and Hannah to trigger every dormant account at once.

“She said Christmas would free us,” Clara whispered.

“It nearly killed you.”

“She said someone changed the plan.”

“Who?”

Clara’s eyes moved toward the hospital door.

“Me.”

Hannah felt the room tilt.

Clara admitted receiving messages from a woman using Hannah’s face. The woman promised that a more severe exposure would force police to preserve the evidence rather than dismiss the event as a family argument.

Clara agreed to enter the garage voluntarily.

She believed Eleanor would release her after ninety seconds.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You would have stopped it.”

“Yes.”

“And then Dad would keep controlling everything.”

“You let yourself be poisoned.”

“I thought I knew the dose.”

“You didn’t.”

“No.”

Clara had become another adult inside the family system, using danger as leverage because she believed truth required a victim.

But she had not locked the door.

She had not removed the oxygen battery.

She had not extended the exposure.

The final escalation came from the substitute Hannah.

Ward traced the duplicate’s facial template to an inactive Voss patient file.

Subject name:

Hannah Reed.

Date of birth:

The same day as the real Hannah.

Medical notes described two genetically matched infants raised in separate households.

Hannah looked at the screen.

“I wasn’t a twin.”

The prenatal records already showed triplets during Evelyn’s later pregnancy with Clara.

No one had examined the records from Hannah’s birth.

Evelyn’s first pregnancy may also have produced two children.

One went home.

One entered Voss Continuity.

The substitute had not been trained from a stranger.

She was Hannah’s own twin.

A security alert sounded.

The hospital’s secured evidence room opened using Hannah’s fingerprint.

Hannah stood beside Clara.

Ward and Morales were in the room.

No one else should have possessed it.

The camera showed a woman entering.

Same height.

Same face.

Same winter clothing as Hannah.

She removed Martin’s tablet from the evidence shelf and opened the final beneficiary file.

The unknown name changed.

HANNAH REED — PRIMARY

Then a second line appeared beneath it.

HANNAH REED — ORIGINAL

The woman looked directly into the camera.

“Only one of us was born Hannah.”

She turned the tablet toward the lens.

A live feed showed Evelyn, Faith, and Eleanor inside an underground medical facility.

Behind them stood a fourth daughter wearing an oxygen mask.

Clara stared at the screen.

“That’s me.”

Hannah looked toward the hospital bed.

Clara was still holding her hand.

The woman on-screen had the same face, the same bruises, and the same torn coat.

The hospital monitor suddenly rejected Clara’s wristband.

PATIENT IDENTITY INVALID.

Outside the treatment room, the lights went dark.

The duplicate Hannah’s voice came through the speaker.

“Ask the woman in the bed which sister you actually rescued from the garage.”

Clara’s grip tightened painfully.

Then she whispered:

“I was hoping you would never ask.”
