Chapter 6 - THE ROOM WITHOUT A NUMBERThe hospital’s official patient system contained no Eleanor Reed-Voss.

The hidden profile came from a private server connected to an unused treatment wing beneath the respiratory unit.
The elevator did not list that floor.
A maintenance key opened it.
Ward, Morales, Cole, and a hospital administrator descended while Hannah remained beside Clara.
The lower corridor was warm, silent, and recently cleaned.
One room contained two beds.
One had fresh sheets.
The other held restraints, oxygen tubing, and a folded red wool coat.
Evelyn’s coat.
A camera inside the ceiling transmitted directly to Voss Continuity.
The adjoining room contained childhood photographs of Hannah and Clara taken without their knowledge.
School events.
Christmas dinners.
Hospital visits.
Evelyn’s funeral.
Someone had watched the family for decades.
The walls also displayed training images.
A young girl practiced Evelyn’s posture in front of a mirror.
At twelve, she wore the red coat.
At eighteen, she copied Evelyn’s handwriting.
At twenty-five, she wore Clara’s hairstyle and hospital bracelet.
The institute had raised the missing twin as a living key to the Reed family.
Her file identified her only as Subject E-2.
Eleanor Two.
The first Eleanor was their aunt.
The second was Clara’s twin.
A recorded evaluation played automatically.
Malcolm Voss’s voice spoke from decades earlier.
“E-2 demonstrates superior respiratory stability. C-1 remains medically fragile but emotionally bonded to the home family. Maintaining both subjects separately allows comparative study.”
Clara’s illness was not accidental.
The sisters had been divided into control and exposure groups.
Clara received compounds that provoked respiratory episodes.
Her twin received stabilizing treatment.
Martin’s home became a long-term laboratory.
The freezing garage was the final comparison.
How would each twin respond to controlled cold, oxygen deprivation, and family betrayal?
Ward found a schedule.
Clara’s garage exposure began at 8:10.
E-2’s exposure was scheduled at 8:12 inside the hidden hospital wing.
The two women were supposed to undergo the same event simultaneously.
One at home.
One inside the medical facility.
But E-2’s room was empty.
A smear of blood marked the restraint buckle.
The missing twin had escaped before the test.
She may have gone to the Reed house wearing Evelyn’s coat.
Hannah listened through the secure call.
“She locked Clara inside?”
“Possibly,” Ward said. “Or she tried to interfere after someone else did.”
The garage video showed a copied police badge.
The attacker’s face remained hidden.
The twin may have staged the badge to implicate Morales.
Or another institute operator had done it.
Cole recovered a voice recorder beneath the hospital bed.
A young woman whispered:
“My name is not Eleanor. They call me that because it opens doors.”
She described watching Hannah and Clara through cameras while being told the family had rejected her at birth.
Malcolm taught her that Clara received love while she received purpose.
Evelyn’s image became part of her training.
She was ordered to imitate their mother because Martin obeyed Evelyn’s voice more readily than anyone else’s.
The recording continued.
“Martin thinks I am Evelyn when the lights are low. Clara thinks I am a ghost. Hannah has never seen me.”
Then her tone changed.
“They are going to freeze Clara on Christmas Eve. They want Hannah to find her before death, but after permanent damage. I will not let them finish.”
The twin had known about the attack.
Whether she prevented or participated remained unclear.
The last sentence was addressed directly to Hannah.
“If you hear this, look inside Father’s tablet for the name he buried before we were born.”
Ward searched the encrypted files.
A third daughter appeared in an old fertility contract.
Evelyn had not carried twins.
She had carried triplets.
The third embryo was removed before birth through an unauthorized fetal procedure.
The records claimed it did not survive.
Its designation was:
