Chapter 2 - THE APPOINTMENT THAT NEVER HAPPENEDPolice reached the Reeves home before the people outside could force the door.

Patricia remained beside her SUV with two grocery bags in the back seat. The man accompanying her wore blue scrubs beneath a winter coat but carried no hospital identification.
He introduced himself as Aaron Pike, a patient-transport specialist from BrightPath Pediatric Wellness.
When an officer asked for the facility’s address, Pike provided a business card listing a rented mailbox.
When asked for his medical license, he stopped cooperating.
Daniel carried Ethan into the living room while paramedics examined him.
The child’s heart rate was elevated. His blood pressure was low. Small adhesive circles covered his shaved scalp, suggesting that sensors had recently been removed.
Lauren stood against the kitchen counter under police supervision.
Patricia continued insisting that Ethan had attended a specialized overnight sleep study.
“Then why did you tell me he was at St. Matthew’s?” Daniel asked.
“Because you reject every treatment I suggest.”
“I reject secret procedures performed without my consent.”
“You would have frightened him.”
Ethan looked at his grandmother.
“You said Daddy wasn’t allowed to find me.”
Patricia’s expression hardened.
“He was confused from the sedative.”
The paramedic turned sharply.
“What sedative?”
Patricia claimed she had misspoken.
Aaron Pike suddenly moved toward his vehicle.
An officer stopped him.
Inside his coat was a sealed syringe labeled only with Ethan’s initials and the code S-17.
Pike said the medication was for emergency agitation.
Ethan had no history of violent behavior.
Daniel opened the St. Matthew’s portal again. The appointment had been scheduled by Lauren three days earlier for 11:45 p.m.
It was canceled fourteen minutes before Ethan was supposed to arrive.
The cancellation originated from Lauren’s phone.
“You never planned to take him there,” Daniel said.
Lauren’s mouth trembled.
“St. Matthew’s was only the meeting point.”
Patricia interrupted.
“Stop talking.”
The command revealed more than Lauren’s confession.
A detective named Mara Quinn arrived and separated them.
Ethan was taken to the county children’s hospital with Daniel in the ambulance. Lauren was not permitted to ride with them.
During the journey, Ethan described bright lights, cold sheets, and a room where adults told him to stay silent while they placed “little stickers” across his head.
“Was Grandma there?” Quinn asked gently.
“At first.”
“Was your mother there?”
Ethan nodded.
“She signed a lot.”
“Did she stay?”
“No. She said she had to take the groceries home.”
Daniel remembered the bags inside Patricia’s SUV.
They had not come from a supermarket. The logos belonged to a discount store located beside the industrial park where BrightPath rented a small office.
Ethan said he had escaped by hiding beneath those bags after Patricia loaded them into the SUV.
She stopped at a gas station. Ethan climbed out through the rear door and walked nearly a mile through the dark.
His unfamiliar clothes came from a laundry cart inside the facility. His own dinosaur pajamas had been taken away.
“Why did you leave?” Daniel asked.
Ethan gripped his sleeve.
“The other boy stopped answering.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What other boy?”
“They called him S-16.”
At the hospital, doctors sealed Ethan’s clothes and collected blood samples.
Toxicology found a powerful sedative and an experimental neurological compound not approved for use in children.
Detective Quinn searched the name BrightPath Pediatric Wellness.
No licensed medical facility existed under that name.
The company had been incorporated eleven days earlier.
