Chapter 6 - THE GROCERY BAGSThe grocery bags from Patricia’s SUV were searched again.
The first contained Ethan’s dinosaur pajamas, shoes, and winter coat.
His clothing had been sprayed with disinfectant, then sealed inside ordinary food packaging to avoid medical-waste tracking.
The second bag contained a hospital wristband bearing Ethan’s correct name.
It came from St. Matthew’s.
The wristband had been printed at 10:52 p.m., nearly an hour before his scheduled appointment.
Lauren admitted entering the hospital lobby with him.
She used a self-check-in kiosk while Patricia waited outside.
A woman in scrubs approached and told Lauren that the pediatric department had moved Ethan’s appointment to another building because of a plumbing emergency.
Lauren followed her through a service exit.
No plumbing emergency had occurred.
The woman used St. Matthew’s computer to create the wristband, then canceled the appointment after taking Ethan.
Daniel obtained security footage from the hospital parking garage.
Lauren held Ethan’s hand as they approached the BrightPath van.
He resisted.
She bent down and spoke to him.
The camera had no audio, but Daniel knew the gesture. Lauren touched Ethan’s cheek the way she did when promising something would be safe.
Ethan climbed into the van because his mother told him to.
Patricia drove.
Aaron Pike sat beside the child.
Lauren remained in the parking garage holding the grocery bags.
She watched the van leave.
Then she returned home.
“You said you went with him,” Daniel said.
“I planned to.”
“But?”
“Mom told me parents could contaminate the results.”
“So you abandoned him with strangers.”
“My mother was there.”
“Your mother was one of them.”
Lauren did not answer.
The grocery bag also held a sealed plastic pouch containing a second child’s shirt. The fabric carried blood from Owen Clarke, S-16.
Investigators believed Halcyon mixed clothing and medical materials between subjects to confuse forensic identification if authorities found the transport vehicles.
One receipt remained inside the bag.
Patricia had purchased oversized sweatpants, gray sweatshirts, bottled water, and disposable razors at 1:18 a.m.
She knew Ethan’s hair would be shaved before she arrived.
“She told me there might be a small patch removed,” Lauren said.
“The receipt says four razors.”
Lauren stared at the timestamp.
Patricia had prepared to shave multiple children.
Ethan woke and asked for his stuffed dog from home.
Daniel retrieved it from the evidence-cleared items.
Ethan held it tightly, then said something Quinn had not heard before.
“Grandma put the little silver thing in the dog.”
Daniel froze.
A technician opened the toy’s battery compartment.
Inside was a microSD card.
Ethan had seen Patricia hide it before leaving the facility. When she placed the toy inside the grocery bag, he removed the card and pushed it deeper into the compartment.
The device contained participant videos, payment records, and messages between Patricia and Halcyon’s medical director, Dr. Wesley Crane.
One video showed Ethan inside the treatment room.
Another showed Owen Clarke unconscious on the bed beside him.
Crane told Patricia that Owen’s heart rhythm had become unstable.
Patricia replied:
“Use Ethan’s clean readings in Owen’s chart.”
“Then what do we use for Ethan?”
“The father-abuse protocol.”
Halcyon intended to falsify Ethan’s test results using another child’s data while creating a custody accusation from Ethan’s drugged statements.
The final video showed Owen being moved into the second van.
A nurse turned toward the camera.
Daniel recognized her.
